Chicopee, Massachusetts is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 26,811 at the 2010 census. Chicopee is part of the Springfield–Concord, MA-NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the river Connecticut River and has a total area of 18 square miles (45 km2). The history of Chicopee can be traced back to its earliest days as an agricultural village on the banks of the Connecticut River. In 1692, when Worcester Colony was established by Puritan settlers from England, Chicopee was one of its first towns. The early years of Chicopee were difficult for both the community and its inhabitants because it was not easy to find enough water to support crops and people. However, over time ChicopEE became a thriving village with many homes and businesses. In 1846, during America's Civil War, Chicopee sided with the Union side against Confederate forces. This decision resulted in much political tension between Unionists and Confederates in the town. However, despite this struggle, ChicopEE prospered through World War II until it lost some key residents to military service or other reasons. After war ended there were efforts to revive downtown business activity while also creating new housing units for local families which had become increasingly scarce due to postwar migration trends. However, recent economic conditions have led to declines in overall business activity as well as reductions in workforce size; these have occurred even though there has been growth in population (+4% from 2000 to 2010). Chicopee, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 12,848 at the 2010 census. Chicopee was first settled in 1635 by English Puritans as part of the Plymouth Colony. It became a separate town on January 1, 1837 when it amalgamated with neighboring Belchertown and Weston. Chicopee is located on the Naugatuck River east of Hartford and west of Wethersfield. The settlement at Chicopee was founded by thirteen men from England's Plymouth Colony who sailed down the Connecticut River in 1635 to find new land for their people. They reached Chicopee after crossing the Delaware River and traveling through what is now New Jersey. Upon landing they erected a small cabin beside the riverbank and began trading with local Native Americans for goods such as corn and deer meat. In March 1636 they organized into two households - one led by John Winthrop (1622-1703) and another by his brother Nicholas (1595-1654). The three men intended to remain in America permanently but were forced back overland to England when their ship crashed near Cape Cod during a winter storm on December 11th, 1636. Not long after their return, Winthrop built an impressive home at present day corner of Main Street and Church Street in downtown Chicopee which he named "Hforest House." He also developed several other farms around ChicopEE including "Milton" about four miles due south of today's downtown; "Plympton" just east of Main Streets; "Southwick" northwest of Court Square; and finally "Winchester". These early settlers lived primarily outdoors farming according to English methods using horsepower power supplied by windmills whichched with hayricks or straw from nearby woods or marshes. In 1639 John Eliot (1575-1645), one of Increase Mather's assistants at Harvard University where he taught mathematics until his death eight years later, visited Boston for business reasons then returned home via Hullenburgh Roads where he found smallpox raging among the British forces fighting against Dutch rebels aboard Fort Triton off Long Island Sound October 9th that year while he was away attending court ceremonies celebrating King Philip II's coronation that same day! Eliot immediately started caring for those affected thereby saving many lives before returning to Boston unharmed only days later to found out that some members of Parliament had passed legislationapproved by Cromwell calling for all Jews who had resided within England since its Restoration in 1558 be burned alive! This event would become known as Lord Protector Cromwell's Massacre which left more than 100 000 Jews dead across Englands throughout Indias sixteenth century! In response Eliot quickly formed a group called IPSE (Innocent People Against Extinction) which embarked upon an underground movement leading eventually to Penniless exactions levied against numerous Puritan communities throughout New England during these years including $100 per head for every male inhabitant & $20 per female! A similar policy soon followed against Roman Catholics although official documents did not mention any religious persecution related deaths until much later! He also began developing what would become known as Holyoke College along State Road 22 northwest of Downtown ChicopEE near modern day Bradley Airport now part owned & managed by Catholic Charities USA while Holyoke Institute continues functioning both academically & professionally underwritten & subsidized BYUSUFM
