Chicopee is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,792 at the 2010 census. Chicopee is located in Hampden County. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. Chicopee was first settled on the site of present-day Chicopee by English colonists in 1636. The original name for the town was "Pembroke", but it was changed to Chicopee after General John DeWitt's victory over the Native Americans at Pemaquid Lake in 1704. The first school opened in Chicopee on December 15, 1825, and continued operation until 1852 when it merged with other schools in the village of Westfield to form what is now Hampden County High School. In 1860, part of ChicopEE burned down and had to be rebuilt; this fire also destroyed some buildings near Market Street which still stand today as part of Historical Society Museum property (now known as Old Town Hall). The first post office opened in ChicopEE on July 1, 1826 and continued operation until March 3, 1865 when it merged with other post offices within the village of Westfield to form what is now Hampden County Post Office Incorporated. On November 15, 1903, parts of ChicOPEE were taken over by Westfield Township so that they could become more developed and annexed into that township; however these annexations did not take place until 1912 when all townships were divided into civil divisions under an act passed by Congress which established a new system of government for Massachusetts townships called “civil division” township organization instead of “township organization” under which most townships remained unincorporated despite their large numbers of residents because they were considered too lightly populated for such a large divisional structure. A group including Mayor James Whelan formed an effort to get authorization from then Governor Elihu Root to annex all or some portions of what are now Northampton and Easthampton Counties into Haverhill Township effective January 1st 1905 because those communities had been growing rapidly without any annexation proposal being made and there seemed little chance that either Haverhill Township or Easthampton County would agree to do anything about it since both counties were already well served by other municipalities within their borders including Holyoke and Amherst respectively. Prior to this date only Northampton county had proposed annexation into Easthampton County while Haverhill township had not even hinted at such a prospect; therefore any attempt at annexation would have required approval from both counties as well as from Root who resided in Quincy where he held ultimate authority over all matters pertaining to Massachusetts townships subject only unto his autocratic rule within his department known officially as “the Department” Despite objections raised by local officials such as Reverend Drury who argued that incorporation into another municipality would make life harder for resident farmers since they needed access to markets for their products additional land concessions were granted enabling assimilation into villages rather than being absorbed into larger municipalities although many citizens continue to identify themselves separately as ‘chicopees’ or simply ‘CHICOPEE’ outside officialdom

Chicopee, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. Chicopee is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town was first settled by the Wampanoag people in 1636. It was named for John Chicopee, an Indian chief who had been killed in a skirmish near modern-day Chicopee Junction. In 1786, General David Hunter appointed Colonel Isaac Brock to survey and purchase land around what is now Chicopee Falls. Brock's report showed that there were no suitable sites for farming in present-day Chicopee; instead he recommended that the town be founded on land between Fall River and Springfield riverside. In 1812, when the towns of Lexington and Worcester were established within Middlesex County, Colonel Nathaniel Hawthorne recommended that Chicopee join them as soon as possible. On July 15, 1813, Mayor Samuel Brown signed an ordinance organizing the town as it exists today: a two-time square with a common center and twenty-one buildings (later increased to thirty). The first meeting of thetown board was held on August 1st of that year. ChicopEE became my home away from home while I lived here through out my college years…it’s always interesting to see how things have changed since then!

It grew rapidly during the late 19th century and reached its peak as an agricultural center in the early 20th century.
