Chicopee is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 11,827 at the 2010 census. Chicopee is part of the Springfield– Holyoke–Bedford, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered by the towns of Holyoke to the east and west and West Springfield to the north. The first settler in Chicopee was Nicholas Goodspeed, who arrived in 1638. The town's name means "place where good fowl are found." In 1735, Achitofeles Brown built a mill on what is now Main Street in downtown Chicopee. A gristmill was built by John Beal about 1775 and operated until 1825; it had a waterwheel that turned a crank for grinding corn. In 1834, Daniel Webster bought land adjacent to present-day Park Road and developed it into what is now Webster Square. In 1851, Amos Kendall acquired property along Park Road and developed it into modern-day Kendall Square. In 1865, the first post office opened in Chicopee with seven acres (2 km²) of land grant from President Abraham Lincoln; it remained open until 1915 when it moved to Holyoke. During World War II, much of central Massachusetts was occupied by Japan as part of their Operation Magic Carpet campaign; Chicopee saw increased activity due to its close proximity to military installations around New England and its ability to provide goods and services needed by Allied troops stationed there (such as grocery stores). After the war ended, many buildings in downtown Chicopee were renovated or replaced with new ones as references for postwar architecture throughout New England; this included Oneonta's General Electric Building which still stands today on Broadway near US Route 15A/Route 128 across from Interstate 95/I-95 exit 12B
