Chicopee, Massachusetts is a small town located in central Massachusetts. The population was 5,279 at the 2010 census. Chicopee is the most populous municipality in Hampshire County and the second most populous municipality in New England after Lowell, Massachusetts. Chicopee is also home to the only college of its kind in New England - Hampshire College. The history of Chicopee dates back to 1747 when a group of English farmers founded the town on land they had purchased from Native Americans. The early settlers were primarily disbanded soldiers who had deserted their units during the American Revolution. In 1821, Chicopee became part of Middlesex County and was incorporated as a town by an act of the legislature. In 1834, Chicopee adopted a new municipal charter which allowed for more than one hundred businesses to operate within its limits without being taxed separately. This led to rapid growth and incorporation as a city on July 1, 1854 by an act of the legislature. On November 3rd that year, ChicopEE voters passed a resolution recognizing Chinese immigrants who had arrived in large numbers since1898 and pledging support for their integration into society. During World War II, many people from Chicopee served in military service or worked for war-related industries such as munitions production or engineering. Many residents are descended from these wartime veterans including Mayor Joseph Ahern and his brother John Ahern Sr.. Afterward, many families moved away from ChiCOPEE due to expensive housing prices and political changes made within NHGOP at that time which favored rural over urban interests (Foley). However, some residents have chosen to return to their hometown throughout different waves of economic prosperity (Beach). Today, ChicopEE continues its tradition as an open-minded community that supports cultural diversity through events like Chinese weekend concerts and art exhibitions; moderate drug usage; LGBTQ+ rights; voting rights; environmental activism; music festivals;and startup incubators/ accelerators both inside and outside of business sectors (Davies).

Chicopee, Massachusetts was first settled in 1641 by the Plymouth Colony. The town was originally called New Ipswich after the day of its founding. It became Chicopee in 1781 when the Connecticut General Assembly moved the seat of government from Hartford to Chicopee and changed the name of the town to honor Thomas Parker, 3rd Baronet of Wickenfield. In 1853, Chicopee's population reached 10,000 people and it became a city on April 20th, 1855. It is now part of Springfield with a population of over 150,000 people. The history of Chicopee goes back to at least 1641 when a group of English colonists named themselves "New Ipswich." They were looking for land that would support their colony and they found it here in present-day Chicopee. The original settlers were about thirty men and women who came overland from England on horseback. They landed on October 21st, 1641 near what is now Wareham in Suffolk County. The town was founded on this site by Nicholas Boylston and his wife Sarah Weymouth under the name New Ipswich (now Wellesley). At first they built just a small cabin but soon started farming land around it. John Winthrop also arrived in town in 1642 as one of these early settlers and he began construction on what is today known as Winthrop Hall (later renamed Dexter Hall). In 1781, when Connecticut General Assembly moved the seat of government from Hartford to Chicopee, Act No 6 passed Congress establish a new government for all Rhode Island west bank except Narragansett Bay where continued British rule left matters unsettled
