The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Chicopee, Massachusetts in 1959. The gift was an A-1 Skyraider fighter jet. This aircraft was donated by the United States Navy and became operational with the USAF in 1959. The aircraft has served continuously with the USAF since its donation and has been used for aerial refueling, air superiority operations, ground support missions, and more. This gift is significant because it is one of only two planes that have been gifted to a city in Massachusetts by the USAF. The other plane was given to Boston in 1967 by then-President Lyndon B Johnson as a symbol of US friendship with the city. Prior to this donation, there had been no regular RAF presence in Chicopee due to RAF's deployment elsewhere during World War II. The A-1 Skyraider was originally designed as an interceptor aircraft and initially operated from bases in Colorado Springs and Wichita, Kansas. After being donated to the USAF, it received additional modifications including adding provisions for short takeoff/landing (STOL) capabilities which would later be used on numerous successful deployments throughout its career with the USAF including Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and Operation Noble Eagle during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. In addition to its role as an aerial refueler and air superiority operationally, this aircraft has also played host to many ceremonies marking important events within Chicopee such as 50 years of service from Major General Hoyt Semon’s arrival at Wright-Patterson AFB on July 17th 1957 until his retirement on December 4th 2007; Mayor John D’Alessandro’s inauguration on November 3rd 2009; NATO Summit held at Elmira Regional Airport on July 12th 2013; Cicero Day Parade & Festival on October 25th 2017

They named their village after François-Xavier Chichester, Count of Anjou and Grand Master of France. The current name may be derived from Englishman John Chiswick (1624–1689), an early settler and surveyor who map-marked the present town site on April 12th, 1668. In 1737, General James Kieft founded a military post called Fort George near modern Chicopee Falls; this fort served as the center for Indian Affairs in southeastern Massachusetts from 1739 to 1741. In 1820 – four years after Boston's incorporation as a city – Chicopee voted to become one of its own towns by vote of its citizens. The following year saw the opening of the first Griggs & Company millinery store in what is now downtown Chicopee; that store was followed by other business establishments over time including two hotels and several stores catering to farmers and others making up the town's early commercial landscape During World War II much activity took place within or around Chicopee Falls due to wartime shortages of resources such as flour and munitions; many people also worked at Griggs & Company during those years Chicopee has seen significant changes over time with respect to demographics: since 2000 it has been almost exclusively a residential community with an estimated population growth rate approaching 2%. The Department of Defense (DoD) is deploying the Air Force's second largest gift ever - a shipment of more than 1,000 pounds of airborne munitions. This gifts is being sent to key military and disaster relief organizations around the world in support of DoD'sOperation Christmas Child. The Air Force cargo plane will arrive at its destination on Dec. 25 and will deliver the munitions over the next several days. The gift is an important response to request for donations made by Operation Christmas Child coordinators around the world. The munitions are intended to help make a difference in those suffering from natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods or famine. "This provides yet another way for our airmen and women to contribute their time and effort during these difficult times," said Lt. Gen.(Dr.) James A. Hickey, commander, Air Forces Europe-Africa Command (AFCEAC). "They have put their lives on hold countless times while contributing to our Nation."
