In 1847-8 large quantities of coal were brought into this area by a small group of men led by Amos Kendall from Westfield; they mined until 1861 when transportation improved enough that salt production became possible along cranberry creek near present day Bradley Beach where salt works continued until 1919 when all operations ended because of regulations set by Generalopened up new areas for mining including Chappaquiddick Point south of present day Wellesley Avenue). Chelsea is part of the Boston metropolitan area and is one of the most populous towns in Massachusetts. The town started as a simple agricultural settlement on the borders of what are now Middlesex and Essex Counties, near modern-day Brockton. In 1692, Englishman John Winthrop led an expedition to found Harvard University in Cambridge,Massachusetts; he named his new college "Harvard" after himself and Chelsea (then just West India Village). Soon after Winthrop's arrival, other settlers arrived: some of them were Quakers who had fled religious persecution in England. Others were Puritans from New England who had come to help spread their religion here. These early residents built homes around a small square called Church Square which they called "The Square." From this square they could see all around their community and developed its first rules of behavior - such as not allowing firearms within 100 yards of their homes - that still apply today. However, life couldn't stay simple for long. Villagers needed to trade goods with neighboring communities so they could get food and raw materials for their homes and businesses; these activities generated more business activity than farming could handle so growth slowed down dramatically. This situation changed whenapproaching 2200 when two important transportation arteries opened up in southeastern Massachusetts-the Great Western Road through Burlington County northwest into New York City (and vice versa) and later Route 128 from Hartford Connecticut east into Pennsylvania; these opened up rich new markets for local farmers which helped spur rapid growth once again! In 1824 another important event happened when General James Kieft bought land north of Chelsea from the Pequot Indians for $1 million dollars – this provided valuable access to fresh water resources that allowed Congregationalists to build mills along the river near present day Stamford Bridge. It has been decided unanimously by the board that no constitution or government can be erected until further order may be obtained from Chatham authorities respecting boundaries etc…” So began Chelsea’s history as an incorporated village – it only took until 1861 before it became part of Manchester Township although some residents continued to reside there until 1925 due to lack of available housing nearby….
