The Chelsea Naval Base is home to the United States Navy's Fifth Fleet. The naval base was founded in 1898 and served as a center for American military operations in the Caribbean and South America. In 1911, the United States Congress created the Chelsea Naval Hospital, which was located on the base. The hospital became operational in 1916 and served as a primary care facility for sailors and Marines. In 1949, the navy constructed what is now known as Building A on the Chelsea Naval Base. This building housed one of the first armored vehicles used in combat during World War II. The tank was called "The Beast" and it measured over two hundred feet long and thirty-six feet wide at its widest point. It had four turrets that could fire fifty rounds each per minute. In 1954, Chelsea Naval Base became home to Headquarters of NATO's Western Hemisphere Command when member nations merged into this organization. Since then, Headquarters has played an important role in U.S.-European security cooperation. In 2003,Chelsea NASB opened its doors to civilians for the first time ever when it became part of MASS MoD (Military Sealift Command).
