As Chelsea, Massachusetts comes into its third century (or so it seems), the town has seen a number of different national guard units stationed here in the past. This history can be traced back to 1834 when ten soldiers from Massachusetts were called to serve in the Mexican-American War. Since then, there have been a number of different national guard units stationed in and around Chelsea. One of the most famous national guard units that Chelsea has seen is the “Green Berets”. The unit was first stationed here from 1955-1959 as part of United States Army Reserve Command. It then moved to Fort Bragg, North Carolina before finally being relocated to Chelsea in 1959. The Green Berets are now based at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst and they conduct their operations under the command of Second Lieutenant General Craig Fuller. Another interesting National Guard unit that Chelsea has come into contact with is the “Patriots”. The unit was originally stationed here from 1978-1981 as part of New England Regional Training Center exercises conducted by United States Air Force Reserve Command and later served as an air defense mission detachment for Operation Neptune Spear during Desert Storm in 1991. The Patriots currently reside at Joint Base Lee Scott in Virginia Beach, Virginia and are commanded by Colonel Timothy Cavanaugh Jr..

Chelsea is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,612 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Chelsea was founded in 1630 by Puritan settlers who named it after their home town of Chelmsford, England. Chelsea had a population of over 10,000 by 1800. In 1834, the town became one of the six towns in Middlesex County that were merged into Boston. The name Chelsea derives from a nearby farmstead called Hingham which housed two churches and 12 families before evacuation during American Civil War as part of General Robert Ewell's Union army movement to move Confederate forces out ofBoston's city limits. The village then developed around what is now downtown Chelsea and began annexing neighboring hamlets: West Deptford (now Middle Village), East Deptford (now Little Italy), Bradstreet (now Brewster Avenue), Cedar Hill (now Arlington Heights) and other parts until it reached its current boundaries with Somerville on the western edge of Boston and Everett on the eastern edge near Fenway Park.
