The first settler in Chelsea was John Eliot who founded the village of Eliot in 1638. The name Chelsea originated from a small stream that ran through the town and its site was chosen for its marshy soil which made it difficult to build houses on. In 1765, the village of Chelsea merged with neighboring Amherst to form what would become the largest municipality in Essex County. During World War II, Stamford became one of two U.S. towns located within Japan's Kanto region during wartime military occupation; as a result, many Japanese people were living and working in Stamford until 1945 when they were relocated to other parts of Connecticut or New York City due to air raids over Manhattan. Afterward, most residents returned home and much of Stamford's infrastructure has been preserved including its water system and street grids dating back to colonial times: blocks are named after Revolutionary War generals like Gates (5th), Putnam (6th), Prescott (8th) and Warren (9th). One reason why Stamford has remained relatively unchanged since 1800 is because it lacks many modern amenities such as shopping malls or high-rise apartments like those found elsewhere in larger cities such as Boston or New York City; instead it relies heavily on small businesses that can be counted on to stay open year-round due to their presence along Main Street where grocery stores, pharmacies, daycare centers and other important services are located throughout the community center complex known locally as "the Square." Chelsea, Massachusetts is a town in Franklin County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,849 at the 2010 census. It was incorporated on December 15, 1837. The town was named for Captain Hector Chelsea from New York City. Chelsea is located on the eastern border of Franklin County and straddles the Connecticut River. In 1692 John Winthrop founded the first English settlement in what is now Chelsea; he named it after his father-in-law, General Thomas Wigglesworth of England. After Boston's incorporation as a city in 1736, Chelsea became part of that city's limits and lost its independent status until it regained it following the towns' merger into Franklin County on October 15, 1837. In February 1839 Anthony Bourdin shot and killed Ulysses S. Grant while they were walking to an inauguration ball at White House Garden; Grant had been elected president two years earlier that year but had not yet taken office due to political controversy over his role in the Mexican–American War (1846–48). Bourdin claimed he acted in self-defense when Grant pointed a revolver at him; however no weapon was found on or around Bourdin during or after his arrest and trial. As a result of this shooting several thousand people total participated in protests across America against violence against civilians by Federal forces during the 1840s including some that took place outside Washington D.C., also known as "the March on Washington". The event became known as "the Great Chicago Riot" because many of these protesters were arrested there within blocks of where Morningside Park would later be developed near Clinton Street and Adams Avenue.. After various attempts by local authorities to quell riots throughout American cities during the late 1830s through 1840s with little success,[4] Congress passed an act on May 20th 1850 authorizing President James K. Polk to use all necessary means “to suppress any insurrection or disturbance amongst citizens within these United States” which included martial law powers for up to six months…. With this authority came new responsibility for local governments specifically within Franklin County…. On July 6th 1861 Union Major General Ambrose Burnside attacked Confederate garrison at Petersburg Heights battery using less than three minutes notice before dawn…. resulting in 298 casualties including 22 fatalities….. This attack led directly to war with southern Virginia proper……… In 1865 Stamford residents Boylstonian Loyalists who fought under Confederate Colonel Nathaniel Greene surrendered unconditionally without offering terms….. All remaining members of Manor House except one died suddenly from disease contracted while living below ground in previously unexplored parts of their home during construction phase only days before final surrender……… Aftermath: Over 3200 families moved outduring 1863 battle between Union & Confederates about 10 miles northeast [of Stamford], most likely seeking sanctuary among friends & family already living elsewhere
The town of Chelsea was settled in 1764 by a group of Englishmen who were looking for land to purchase. The first schools were started in 1768 and the town became an incorporated village on March 14, 1838. On July 16, 1851, Chelsea voted to become a city and was incorporated on November 3, 1852.
