The history of the Coast Guard in Cambridge, Massachusetts can be traced back to 1827 when a group of fishermen from Saybrook, Connecticut organized themselves into an organization known as the Yachtmen's Company. The purpose of this company was to provide security for vessels on the river Great Lakes. In 1841, the Coast Guard was founded as a branch of the military and first served in coastal defense duties. In 1861, during the American Civil War, the Coast Guard was mobilized and serving in both Confederate and Union armies. After the war, Coast Guard duties decreased but were revived in 1953 when legislation was passed authorizing establishment of a National Security Council that would coordinate coast guard activities with other federal agencies. In 1969, Congress created the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) which merged with predecessor organizations including NOAA Fisheries to form NOAA today. The History Museum at Noe Valley Station located within Headquarters of NOAA is dedicated to exhibiting significant maritime heritage related to both NOAA and its predecessors including Coast Guardsman who served through World War II and subsequent eras. During World War II many coast guard members volunteered their services for service overseas especially in Iwo Jima where theysinglehandedly held off Japanese forces for weeks until reinforcements arrived from United States Navy ships operating out of Pearl Harbor. Many members later achieved fame during wartime actions such as Operation Neptune's Spear which saw Japan surrender following three months long battle on September 2nd 1945 aboard Iwo Jima’s Hagushi beachhead following successful amphibious landings by U.S., Australian and New Zealand forces under Rear Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto

In 1984, Congress passed a bill that authorizes the creation of a joint task force composed of both military and civilian personnel to support maritime law enforcement activities on U.S coasts. This new task force was designated as the "Coast Guard Aviation Unit." In 1987, the Coast Guard acquired its first jet aircraft, which allowed it to provide better coverage along our coastline. Today, the Coast Guard operates more than 2200 vessels including patrol boats, hovercraft, jets (including Jet Boat Squadron Three), Lighthouse keeperships/ observation posts/ tower platforms/ buoy tender platforms/ icebreaking ships/ lifeboats/ firefighting equipment/ fishing boats/. It is also responsible for many other duties such as Search And Rescue (SAR) missions; Customs Enforcement Investigations; National Marine Fisheries Service; Emergency Operations Center; Air Traffic Control Services; Law Enforcement Support Element;; Hazardous Environment Response Team;; Antarctic Program Support Activity;; Coastal Hazards Group III.; Northern Regional Office.; Maritime Security Group I., II., III.; Special Purpose Vessels Group IV.}
