Army gifts have been a part of soldiering for centuries. Gifts are something that Soldiers can take with them when they leave the military, or give to family and friends upon their return. It is interesting to note that Army gift history begins with the Revolutionary War. When George Washington was elected president in 1789, he tasked his army commander, Nathanael Greene, with selecting a gift for him. Greene chose a sword from London's arms dealer, Robert Harley. The weapon was a marvel and quickly became known as "The General's Sword." As gifts grew more common during the Revolution, it was natural for commanders to select items specific to their service branch. In 1804, General Ethan Allen gave an opera box to United States Marine Corps Commander John Denton aboard his ship during the Boston Tea Party. The gesture showed just how much Respect and Affection the Marines had for Allen and his command. During World War II there were many large donations made by individuals or businesses throughout Massachusetts in order to support America's war effort. One such donation was $10 million given by Levi Strauss & Co., which would later become Macy's Incorporated in 1946. This large sum of money allowed for purchases such as tanks and planes in addition to supplying soldiers on battlefields all over Europe and Asia. Gifts also continued throughout World War II as families collected post-war clothes donated by businesses and individuals alike (eBay being one notable source). After the war ended there were many thank yous given out across Massachusetts including Thank You Notes from Air Force Brigadier General Hoyt Vandenberg (1948) who flew 1st Lt Charles Lindbergh on his first ever air flight; Thank You Notes sent by Mayor Thomas Menino thanking residents who contributed food during the City- wide Hunger Strike of 1947; Thank You Notes sent by State Senator William Foy asking people not to throw snowflakes at White House windows after President Harry Truman received his Nobel Prize; Thank You Notes sent by Governor Francis Sargent after troops liberated Paris from Nazi occupation in 1944; Thank You Notes sent following bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which killed thousands of people

An army gift history in Cambridge, Massachusetts can go back to the Revolutionary War. On November 3, 1775, the Continental Congress passed a resolution authorizing General George Washington to raise an artillery regiment and provide it with weapons and ammunition. The regiment was called the Cambridge Regiment of Artillery. In September of 1776, the same year that the Boston Tea Party happened, Washington ordered his regiment to march to Concord in order to join the fight against British troops. On December 16th of that year, they arrived at Lexington and started firing on British soldiers while others looted stores nearby. The battle ended with American casualties totaling over 50 killed, wounded or missing. After this event, many soldiers from Cambridge enlisted in other armies or simply stopped serving altogether.
Cambridge, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 44,237 at the 2010 census. Cambridge is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States and home to many universities including Harvard University, MIT and Yale University. According to Forbes magazine's 2017 list of "The 20 Most Diverse Cities In America", Cambridge ranks No. 2 behind New York City. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cambridge were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew on their voyage from Rome to Asia around 1524-25. They named the area after Christ's college at Oxford which they had seen on their travels. The Dutch explorer Abel Tasman visited what is now Cambridge in 1630 during his circumnavigation of North America and named it New Netherland after landing there on December 12th of that year along with Herman Rupertus van der Sloot and 1024 others aboard his ship "Nieuw Amsterdam". The town was chartered on February 14th 1795 by General John Sullivan as part of Middlesex County with a population of 10 males over 21 years old (the maximum age at that time). The first house built in present day Cambridge was erected by Peter Pond near the junction of Harvard Avenue and Beacon Street. On July 6th 1817, when Boston became a city, much of present day Arlington Heights was transferred from Suffolk County into Middlesex County as part of the merger process under then-Mayor James Kieft. The village that housing today's colleges - primarily Amherst College - was until then just outside its current borders along Washington Street between Harvard Avenue and Randolph Road (later renamed Arlington Boulevard). On November 1st 1834, during Andrew Jackson's Ulysses S Grant administration as President of the United States, Congress passed an act creating three new counties within Middlesex County: Quincy local government district #2 included all or parts thereof annexed from Arlington Heights; Belchertown government district #1 included all or parts thereof annexed from Framingham;and West Roxbury government district #3 included all or parts thereof annexed from Waltham Abbey . In 1837–38 two more towns were chartered within this newly created county: Lawrence (Southborough) on May 5th 1838 followed by Revere (Northborough) six days later on June 3rd1839 . Of these only Lawrence remains extant as a community today while both Revere & Southborough have vanished into history.
