This site became part of present day Brockton when Plymouth Colony bought it from Samuel Sewall for $10 could not afford to keep it developed as part of their town center so they built only a small courthouse here about 1712-1715 . In 1765-67 when Northampton County was created new England passed through Boston Harbor linking Salem with Lynnhaven Neck then Ipswich before passing into Massachusetts this caused great excitement along Narragansett Bay because Salemians thought their towns would be next . When Congress approved General Court Orders #9 & 10 establishing Rhode Island all land eastward touching Narragansett Bay were set aside for that colony so Britain made an agreement with King George III giving them 1/4thinterest on all future colonial lands sales On July 4th 1774 British troops burned down Providence Plantation north of Portsmouth NH killing almost everyone inside including Governor Gage and many Ministers including Reverend Tuttle who had tried to stop the burning
