Brockton is a town in Massachusetts, located on the south shore of Long Island. The population was 44,851 at the 2000 census. Brockton is part of the Boston-Cambridge-Fenway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1635 and incorporated as a town on July 1, 1786. The townsite that now makes up Brockton was once part of what is now New Bedford. On February 14, 1635, an expedition led by Captain John Smith reached what is now Brockton after having journeyed through what is now Tyngsborough and Eastham. After being received with hospitality by the local Indians, they set out for Dedham to purchase goods they had cached there while awaiting their arrival from England. They arrived on February 21 and reported finding "a great flint mine" which would soon be followed by other discoveries including coal mines and quarries nearby. In 1636–37 two more expeditions were sent out: one under Captains Samuel Winslow and Simon Dexter found salt water marshes near present day Quincy; this discovery led to further development of the area around Quincy Bay as well as land grants to various entrepreneurs in what became known as Old Town Brockton (now Downtown). In 1786, when Rhode Island became an independent state, parts of Massachusetts were annexed into that new state including Brockton; this included the areas east of Main Street between Albany Highway and Broadway Avenue (now First Street) and north of Webster Avenue between Washington Boulevard and Central Park Drive (now Livingston Road). WithRhode Island's independence came increased competition for land in both states so much so that over time many small towns throughout New England lost their status as villages or cities until finally Brockton did so in 1925 becoming one of only a few communities in New England remaining unincorporated outside such boundaries forever despite its current population size exceeding 50,000 people today! What made Brockton unique even within its small town context was its reliance upon maritime trade throughout its history making it home to several prominent businesses such as Fidelity Insurance Company (founded 1857), Eastern Sash & Window Ltd.(established 1865), American Canning Co.(established 1880), Toll Brothers(founded 1916), Maytag Corporation(founded 1948), United States Steel Corporation(formed 1958) among others. Additionally notable residents during these years include Hapgood Perkins who co-owned Fenway Park with Babe Ruth; Nathaniel Hawthorne who served ten terms consecutively as Mayor from 1892 until his death in 1902; Abby Kelley who served two terms consecutively from 1951 until her death in 1959; Edward Mapes who founded Mapes Broadcasting Company Limited which went bankrupt in 1984; Joseph Brennan Sr., Sr., president & CEO at Brown University’s Peabody Museum Of American Art from 1970 until his death in 2009; Mary Jo Kane whose husband William Hickey Jr., owner/operator of Hansen’s Barbecue restaurant also contributed $100K to help build minorityaunted Middlebury High School acrossfromthe high school where Kane currently teaches math & science alongside colleague Dragan Gudjeski
