The history of the Brockton Soldier's and Sailors' Museum is a long and winding one. It began in 1847 when two Mohawk Indian veterans, George Cushman and Asa Winthrop, decided to open an outdoor museum in Brockton after spending time visiting the city on their way home from the Revolution. The first collection of artifacts was donated by members of the community in 1851. In 1865, a small brick building was erected on State Street in Brockton to house the museum. This facility would be renamed the Soldiers' and Sailors' Museum in 1923 after it became part of Massachusetts State University.
