The town was founded in 1796 and incorporated in 1803. Beverly's name comes from two early settlers, Beveridge and Weston. The town has a rich history dating back to its founding when two early settlers named Beveridge and Weston erected a log cabin on the present site of Beverly Mills. The first settler to live in Beverly was John Nicholson who arrived in 1796. In 1803, Beverly became an incorporated community under the name of "Beaverdam". In 1907, Beverly unseated Holyoke as the largest municipality in Massachusetts due to population growth within that city limits; however, Holyoke regained its status as the largest municipality by 1912 because it had annexed more territory from Beaverdam- which then lost its status as a village after becoming an incorporated town again. In 1916, Beaverdam merged with neighboring towns Fayetteville and Holyoke to form what would become known as Springfield-Holyoke-Fayetteville MSA (MSA stands for Metropolitan Statistical Area). Today, Beverly remains one of the most vibrant communities located within Springfield-Holyoke-Fayetteville MSA. With over 5,000 residents living within its borders alone, there is plenty of opportunities for residents to engage in all types of activities including education and economic development opportunities. Additionally, many businesses have been established within this community that serve both local residents and those residing near by across Interstate 95 or Interstate 86. Beverly, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–Fallon Metropolitan Statistical Area. Beverly was first settled in 1636 by English colonists on land acquired from the Narragansetts and Wampanoags. The town's name is derived from John Beverly (1601-1672), an Increase Mather descendant who purchased land near Beverly in 1637. In 1797, poet and patriot George Washington spent his summer vacation here before entering service as Commander-in-Chief of America's Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The town became a stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1830s and 1840s when fugitive slaves were brought here to be hidden from pursuers. In 1847, Beverly was chosen as site for one of the two towns chartered by Massachusetts General Court to serve as inferior courts for all residents of Worcester County with jurisdiction over such things as minor league baseball and dog racing. After establishment of this court system, many freedmen found new homes in Beverly because their former masters could not or would not seek legal redress through these local courts. In 1902, Beverly experienced its first tornado outbreak when six homes were destroyed around Willow Grove Road and parts of Center Street. A total of twenty-four people were injured in this event which caused extensive damage to both businesses and residences throughout downtown Beverly Junction
