Barnstable, MA is home to the oldest continuously operating coffee shop in New England. The first Coffee House at 2nd and John Streets was founded on December 12th, 1825 by Captain John A. Macdonald and his wife Mary. The Coffee House was a popular place for sailors and residents of the town to gather, chat, and drink coffee. Over the years, the Coffee House has become a haven for local journalists, lawyers, business people,aversaries of presidents George Washington and James K. Polk (1845-1937), as well as artists who have used its interior space to paint colorful murals or write poetry. The Coffee House also served as a meeting place for the town's selectmen from 1829 until it closed its doors in 1951. The last time that the CoffeeHouse saw regular use was on September 26th, 1951 when it was acquired by Mrs. Louise Prentice Cook from her husband's estate.Mrs. Cook operated it as an art supply store until her death in 1984 before it came into private ownership again in 2001 by Jim Gorman who reopened it under the name Barnstable Coffeehouse & Cafe with support from local businesses including King's Hardware Company and Codman’s Lobster restaurant
