The Barnstable National Guard was founded on December 12, 1775, in the town of Barnstable. The unit was first called the Militia Company and then the Rifle Regiment. On July 1, 1847, the militia company became the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. The regiment fought in three wars and acquired a wealth of battlefield experience. It terrorized Native Americans during the American Revolution and played an important role in suppressing Insurrectionary activity in 1837-38. In 1861-1865, it served as part of Union Army forces under General Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War. Afterward, it disbanded due to budget restrictions. On October 1, 1947, it reorganized as a single battalion under command of Brigadier General John Fenton Harriman with headquarters at Quincyport Naval Station. On November 15th 1951 a detachment from this battalion participated in Operation Neptune's Spear which led to North Korean surrender
Barnstable is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Barnstable were Quakers who began arriving in 1630. They named their community after a small town in Yorkshire, England which they had visited on their way to America. In 1751, when British troops burned down part of the Quaker Meetinghouse in Northampton, Mass., the members of the congregation chose to rebuild without any religious symbols and name their new meeting house "Barnstable." Boatmen stopped visits by Europeans from sailing up the Coast Guard's Cape Cod Canal during the early 18th century because there was no navigable waterways connecting that part of New England with those farther south. As a result, many farmers and fishermen developed interests along both sides of Narragansett Bay and developed communities such as Ipswich (now Quincy), Groton (now Willington), Falmouth (now Hadley), Barnstable, Plymouth (now radar station Kirtland Air Force Base), Nantucket (Now part of Wellesley), Provincetown (Now Norwalk) and Wareham (formerly Revere). In 1775-76 during King George's War British troops burned down two houses on present-day South Street in honor of Colonel John Adams' victory over them at Bunker Hill. The colonists responded by adopting an act calling for a day of fasting and prayer to be observed throughout all sections of Massachusetts. With this event as its foundation, Barnstable became one of the earliest towns in Massachusetts to adopt an official seal - made out an image representing itself blazoned "Hampshire" with two ships within a harbor filled with several other boats - indicating its status as a port town proximate to commercial shipping lanes open to all comers. During World War II about 120 local men served aboard U S Navy vessels anchored off Martha's Vineyard; these men are honored with Memorial Day ceremonies every year on April 15th ashore at Pemaquid Landing where they disembarked before refueling or taking passage back upstream for operations underway at Pearl Harbor or Midway Island. On July 4th each year since 1945 local residents gather at Midway Park across from downtown for picnic style food service followed by live music beginning around 5pm until midnight featuring some local veteran bands plus national acts rotating through each year

The National Guard has been present in the United States since 1802. The first unit to be organized was the 2nd Regiment of Dragoons, which raised its first troops on December 11th, 1802. The National Guard played a significant role in American history from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln called for 8,000 Guardsmen to be drafted into service in order to protect southern cities during the Civil War. Throughout most of the war, the Guard played a minor role and only received limited training. However, when Confederate General Robert E Hoods army invaded Union-held Tennessee on April 12th 1865, more than 100 Guardsmen were killed and over 500 wounded in what is known as Battle of Nashville.
Barnstable was first settled in 1635 by the Pilgrims. The town originally consisted of just a few houses and a mill. By 1847, Barnstable had increased to over 100 residents and had built a courthouse, schoolhouse, and jail. In 1861, the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in Barnstable and began construction of its line to Portland. This caused great controversy in the town because it would mean decreased production at the mill which would impact the local economy. However, due to overwhelming support from the community, the mill continued operations even though it lost its biggest customer. In 1916, after World War I ended, Barnstable became one of sixteen towns within Massachusetts designated as an official military zone for housing soldiers barracks and other related activities. Despite this designation, no military activity took place in or around Barnstable during World War II. The mills closed down during that time but were reactivated several years later when new technology made them more efficient than ever before!
