The first permanent settler in what is now Barnstable was John Winthrop in 1630. The town's name derived from the nearby cape of Barnstable Head which could be seen from most of the town and its harbor. In 1775, during the American Revolution, General George Washington visited Barnstable and ordered all military stores to be moved from Salem to Ipswich because there were fears that British forces would enter the town without provocation. In 1821, an act of Congress made Barnstable a part of Harvard University and it remained so until 1978 when it became a part of the newly formed Suffolk County.[3] The university has since shifted its campus to Falmouth on Cape Cod. Nationally known landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted designed much of what is now downtown including parcels bordering present-day central streets such as State Street and High Street between Cooper Avenue and North Kingstown Road; but no trace remains today of his original design for this area which he called "The New England Garden".[4] Many early residents who lived near or within walking distance of Harvard University developed their own businesses along these streets: one example being Jardine & Hastings (later Houghton Mifflin). One result was that many properties along those streets remain in current use as commercial buildings or housing units today despite having been vacant for many years prior to their current incarnation as retail spaces or apartments.
