Barnstable, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlement in Barnstable was made by Captain John Smith in 1624 as part of the expedition that explored and claimed the New England region for England. The town began to form from small villages around 1760 when improvements were made to the local river system and land freed from royal or common ownership became available. From its early days as a fishing village, Barnstable became an important center for industry during the 19th century with its shipbuilding and whaling businesses being among the most important in New England. However, during World War II much of what now makes up Barnstable was destroyed by bombing raids from Axis forces; only parts of downtown remain standing today. The current name given to the town after it joined Plymouth County was chosen in honor of Samuel Maverick (1787-1864), who served as one of the first three US Senators from Massachusetts (the others being John Fessenden and Nathaniel Hawthorne). Maverick had been born in Ipswich, Suffolk, England but arrived at Plymouth Colony on October 25, 1775; he later served as Clerk of Courts (1805-10) and then Asst Judge Advocate General (1812-14). He moved to Andover before becoming involved with politics here and played a leading role in organizing America's fight against Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1828 he married Sarah Wigglesworth (1784-1858), daughter of Representative Isaac Wigglesworth Ives III (1768-1837), one of two men who led Boston through its Reconstruction Period following American victory over France at Yorktown Heights. After her death he remarried twice: first to Louisa Maria Child (1800-78) during his last years; secondly to Caroline Alice Channing During his lifetime Barnstable enjoyed some prosperity due both to its natural resources—such as coal and lumber—and because it had become an agricultural center since it had been granted government assistance through programs such as Public Works Administration which gave farmers access to credit unavailable until thento their more rural neighbors In recent decades much has changed about life here: not just jobs but also housing prices have soared while little haschanged about job quality or wages 1ST SETTLERS IN BARNSTABLE: Captain John Smith & His Expedition(1624)- 1626 In 1624 Captain John Smith founded what would become known as "Barnstable" after landing there on July 24th aboard his ship "Badger". The beans were ground into a paste and taken internally for relief from various illnesses or as an antidote to poisons. One account mentions that “Coffee drinks have been known since before our era by men who travel through many lands” (Farrell). Ancient Egyptians also consumed coffee as a beverage, likely because it was one of the few things they could find that wasn’t affected by bad weather (Lambert). As coffee began to spread throughout Europe during the Middle Ages, it began being used for other purposes such as cooking food or making medications (Goudreau-Leduc). The first European colonists to arrive in America brought beans with them when they came overland in search of new land (Dixon). The founding fathers were familiar with roasted beans from England where they would often purchase them from bakers (Dickinson). Coffee quickly became associated with New England due to its unique flavor profile which included roastiness, earthy flavors, and a hint of chocolate (Lovejoy). Roasting techniques didn’t exist back then so Native Americans roasted their own beans which gave them a slightly more complex flavor than what Europeans enjoyed. By 1775 all American colonies had started producing their own beans which resulted in an even greater variety of coffees available (Weinreb). With so many different coffees available it was difficult for consumers to decide which one they wanted to try based on personal preferences. However, after trying some different coffeesvarious people developed taste profiles which are still recognizable today(Wang et al.). One major difference between old-fashioned roasting and modern roasting is that pre-packaged blends now play an important role in gourmet coffee production because this allows for farmers to produce more specific types of bean varieties that are then blended together yielding a wider range of flavors within each blend(Smithers & Blackmore)). Additionally blending allows for farmers to improve yields while ensuring consistency within each batch thereby increasing quality control(Nelson). There are several factors contributing directly or indirectlytoovespinequality: roast date; origin; countryofproduction; processing methods including water temperature/temperature variations; grind size/shape; handling time(Doerr); storage conditions including light exposure/conditioning
