The Barnstable Volunteer Infantry Association (BVIA) is a volunteer organization that has been organized since 1915. The BVIA was created to promote the military education of children in the town of Barnstable, Massachusetts. In 1916, the BVIA purchased an old munitions store on High Street in downtown Barnstable and began purchasing war materials for use in World War I. During World War I, the BVIA also formed a men’s auxiliary unit and raised money by selling war bonds. After World War I, the BVIA disbanded but continued to support military education in Barnstable through its own programs and events. In 1948, the BVIA recommenced purchases of war materials for use during Korean War and began serving as a museum collection source for soldiers from all over America. In 1989, the BVIA purchased their current building on High Street which housed their archives until 2005 when they moved into their current building. The Barnstable Volunteer Infantry was an American infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was organized on December 12, 1861, at Framingham, Massachusetts, and mustered into service on January 3, 1862. The regiment was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Division of the III Corps under command of General Ulysses S. Grant. On February 14th, 1862, the regiment participated in the Battle of Fort Sumter and then fought at Second Bull Run on April 6th. After fighting at Antietam and Chancellorsville they were transferred to duty with I Corps in May and June 1862. They were again attached to General Grant's army until September when they rejoined him with his III Corps in time for the Battle of Fredericksburg which led to his ultimate surrender on October 9th. The Barnstable Volunteer Infantry mustered out of service on November 15th 1865 at Petersburg Virginia.

Barnstable is an Unincorporated Village in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,532 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town of Barnstable was settled by English colonists in 1624 and its first permanent settlement was on the east bank of the River Medway. The town's present-day boundaries were laid out in 1835 when a portion of Barnstable Township went to Worcester County while the remainder became part of Suffolk County. In 1866, parts of Ipswich and Northampton townships were added toBarnstable as well. In 1907, Barnstable voters passed a referendum authorizing incorporation as a village. On July 5, 1907, incorporation was granted and the village name was changed to Barnstable (pronounced bahr-nuh-tuhs). The village has been governed by a board of trustees ever since. The establishment of NH 3 gas drilling rights in 1984 led to increased development around the town center with businesses like Macy's opening up their doors for customers on Main Street and later developing nearby side streets such as Westport Road and Wellesley Avenue. Barnstable was first settled by the Pilgrims in 1620. The town initially consisted of a small cluster of houses and barns on what is now the east side of Main Street.
