Attleboro, Massachusets was once a thriving town with large plantations and mills. The original settlers in Attleboro came from the town of Boston, Massachusetts in 1630. The town was originally called Merryfield because it lay near the Meeting House (now part of the Attleboro Historical Museum). The first mill on this site was built by John Winthrop in 1635. In 1737, the first gristmill was constructed in Attleboro and continued to be used until 1827. There were also several tanneries and other businesses in Attleboro during its early years. However, by 1800, most of the population had left for various reasons such as rapid growth at Boston or religious wars overseas. In 1824, George Washington visited Attleboro and observed that it "still retains much of its old liveliness and natural beauty". He recommended that Congress establish a college there so that young people could learn about government and its responsibilities. This led to the establishment of Dartmouth College (then known as Brown University) in November 1825. In 1830, when Worcester County became part of Massachusetts, Attleborough became one of the towns within it. By 1840, however, most residents had either moved away or died from disease brought over from England during World War II. Attleborough's fortunes changed again after American independence when many farmers began moving into the area to work on land newly granted to them by General Washington following his victory at Saratoga Field on October 11th,1777. Many farms soon grew rich through their production of hay and other crops while others manufactured goods such as textiles or munitions for America's war effort abroad. A new courthouse was built in 1853 which helped increase business around town while also serving as an important social center for local residents due to its location close to churches and public squares across town. The post-war era saw some significant changes happen to ATTLEBOROUGH; most notably becoming a primarily residential community once again due largely to immigrants arriving here seeking opportunity rather than farming or manufacturing opportunities back home UK/USA .
