Attleboro is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,953 at the 2010 census. Attleboro is the second-largest town in Norfolk County after Norwich. It was founded by English colonists in 1630 and incorporated as a village in 1792. The first permanent settler of Attleboro was John Endicott, who arrived with his family on April 10, 1630. The Endicott family held title to much of what is now Attleboro until 1792 when it passed to John Thornton. In 1802, Isaac Noyes purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of present-day Attleboro from Thornton for $1 million dollars. The new owner prepared to build a large mill that would process cornmeal and other agricultural products from the area but never happened because of financial difficulty. In 1809, Nicholas Cotton became the first white person to be born in Attleborough when he gave birth to his daughter ten miles (16 km) northeast of present-day Attleboro on May 12th at the home of John Sabinett. For many years there were few white people living in or around Attleborough except for occasional travelers passing through on their way to important events or meetings taking place outside of Boston or Worcester . However, during the late 1800s and early 1900s there began an influx of white families fleeing violence and poverty in eastern North America . Many residents migrated Eastward into what is today Suffolk County including those who settled near Woods Hole Naval Station which had opened up adjacent toAttleborough during this time period
