In 1984, the town voted to change its name to "Attleboro" after Nathaniel Hawthorne's book "The Great Gatsby". The settlers were primarily religious men who traveled to Mass each week and dedicated their time to Christianity; however, there was also a large amount of labor involved with farming and quarrying minerals along Route 128 which led to many early memories including a traditions such as "the harvesting Fair", or Faire duHarvest which took place every October since before records exist. In 1784, when NH became part of Massachusetts after Confederation, Attleboro became one of nine townships within that new state. As part of this change, Attleboro Township lost much territory but regained some important buildings including a courthouse (built 1815), jail (1824), post office (1828), schools (1829-1901), storehouses (1830-1920), butter churns (1786) and mills (1800).
