Attleboro is a town in Massachusetts, located on the eastern bank of the Merrimac River. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of Essex County. By 1850, almost all residents were Anglo-Saxons with only a few Jews or Irish immigrants living among them. Industry played an important role in early life here; brickmaking became common during this time because raw bricks could not be grown near water where transportation would have been too expensive or difficult to provide (the rivers provided ). One brickmaker reported having made “thousands” of bricks per day before 1830 when larger factories began production nearby using power tools imported from England . Brick manufacturing declined rapidly starting about 1830 due to competition from cheaper mortars available from Ireland . Brickmakers organized themselves into cooperatives beginning about 1850 which helped maintain quality standards while avoiding monopoly . A millrace running along the Merrimac served as both water supply and local market for goods brought by wagonloads upon completion..
