In 1892, an automated machine that would cause beans to roast evenly was installed at a factory in Attleboro. This helped increase output and improve quality. By 1916, most of the factories had been shut down because of World War I; however, two continued operations until 1948 when they closed for good due to declining demand. Today, only one cafe remains open: Sweet Elephant Coffee Company on Main Street which opened in 1914.
