Attleboro, Massachusetts is one of the most important coffee towns in the United States. The town was founded in 1795 by John Attleborough as a farming community on the edge of what is now Quincy, Massachusetts. In 1819, Attleborough and his son, Nathaniel, opened a small shop called The Coffee House, which became one of the most popular tourist destinations in town. By 1825, The Coffee House had become the largest grocery store in town and continued to be so until it closed its doors in 1913. Attleboro's first coffee house was located at Meetinghouse Road and Fitchburg Avenue. It was open from 7am to 6pm during the day and served refreshments from 5pm to 9 pm at night. At that time, it was one of only two restaurants in town that offered coffee services. Between 1826 and 1830, another small cafe called The G50 House operated on Main Street near where present-day Quincy High School is located. This restaurant served breakfast from 7am to 11am each morning and lunchtime from noon to 2pm each afternoon; however it did not offer coffee service. The Coffee Houses quickly became known as some of America's best-quality coffeehouses due to their consistent quality assurance program which allowed for independent roasters to come into operation and roast their beans according to traditional methods (in addition to using whole bean coffees). There are many types of coffee, but the most popular type is espresso. Espresso is a strong and bitter coffee that is made from two beans which are roasted together. The beans are ground into a smooth paste and then boiled for a short time. After being boiled, the water is used to add strength and flavor to the coffee. The brewing process begins by warming up the water in a pot before adding the ground beans. Once these have been added, the espresso machine will start to make waves of hot water that come out through a small hole in the top. This makes it possible for users to enjoy great cup of coffee without having to wait long periods of time.

The first roaster in Attleboro was Peet's Coffee & Tea in 1872. In 1903, First National Bank opened its doors to serve gourmet coffee made by several Attleboro companies: Sprague's, King's Coffee Company, Fidelity Coffee Roasters and American Creameries. In 1998, Starbucks announced it would open its first store in Massachusetts; however, the store never opened because of opposition from local residents who claimed it would compete with their businesses. Today there are over 10 Starbucks locations throughout Massachusetts.

It was part of the old Pequot Valley until 1959 when it became part of Attleboro Township. The first settler in what is now Attleboro was Samuel Newell in 1638. The town site was first surveyed and laid out by Captain John Eliot on December 12, 1768. The town site was purchased from Colonel Nathaniel Parker by Samuel Brigham in 1807 and incorporated as a village on March 15, 1809. In 1860, the township of Pequot Valley was abolished and Attleboro became an unincorporated community within Plymouth County again. Attleboro is located at (42.828379, -71.057752). According to the USGS map it has a total area of . As of the census of 2010, there were 11,521 people living in the town proper (excluding the villages), 611 households, and 358 families residing within its borders. The population density was . Gourmet Coffee History As coffee became more popular, its production base changed and grew. The first coffeehouses appeared in the late 18th century in London, Paris and other major cities. They were small businesses that sold a single type of coffee, usually a blend of Arabica and Robusta beans. The popularity of these cafes grew as people began to prefer quality over quantity in their morning caffeine fix. By the early 20th century, however, all but a handful of these cafes had closed due to changes in the drinking habits of their customers. Coffee was now being consumed primarily for its flavor rather than its nutritional value. With the development of mechanized equipment and advances in research into new bean types at various laboratories, demand for high-quality coffee increased dramatically throughout much of the 20th century. In fact, during this time period there was an increasing trend towards gourmet coffee products which included unique roastings or specific blends that were not available from standard roasters or grocery stores. Attleboro was first settled by English colonists in 1630 as part of the England's attempt to establish a trading post on the Mystic River. The town was named for John Attleborough, 1st Baronet (1576–1650), who had purchased land there in 1630 from the Indians. Attleboro changed hands several times during its history, and it was only upon its incorporation as a town that it became known for its extensive handicrafts industry. The town's first school opened in 1814 and served children until the 1870s when schools were established in different parts of Middlesex County. The present day courthouse and other buildings were built between 1892 and 1896; they are significant examples of Gothic Revival architecture. In 1916, during World War I, Attleboro participated actively in the war effort by producing munitions for the American military. Attleboro was first settled in 1636 and became a town in 1796. The town was renamed Attleboro, Massachusetts in 1803 after General Nathaniel Adams Attleborough, who played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War. In 1835, the town had a population of 969 and it was annexed by Worcester County in 1840. The county seat of Worcester County moved to Framingham in 1851 and the town lost its status as a county seat. It regained this status when Framingham became the new county seat.
