The town was first settled by English colonists in 1724 and was incorporated as a separate village in 1727. It became an incorporated town on February 14, 1848. The name "Attleboro" comes from the olden days when it was part of Ipswich Township and its residents called their hamlet "Attellborough." The townsite of Attleboro lay within what is now Upton, MA from which it took its name. In 1724, Captain John Eliot of Plymouth built a mill on the river near present-day Attleboro for grinding flour for his men working on the expedition under General George Washington's command against New York City during the revolutionary War. Eliot's mill remained operational until 1823 when it burned down. In 1836 Attleborough voted to secede from Ipswich Township and become an independent community known as "Attleboro." On December 3, 1839, voters approved incorporation into Massachusetts with a population of 2,500 people and 1 store operated by Mr. Higginson (now deceased). The first post office opened in Attleboro on January 1, 1840 with Elisha Allen as postmaster; it closed six weeks later due to low mail traffic caused by Pemaquid embargo proceedings. A new post office building was erected at Main Street and Center Avenue in 1849 and remained open until 1912 when it burned down along with much else in the town during a tornado that toucheddown just outside town late one night

Nanking Coffee Company was founded by Luigi Bezzuoli in 1928 and began producing world-renowned level 1 espresso products under their name soon thereafter. By 1933–34, Nanking Coffee Company had produced over two million cups of quality espresso per day utilizing their Angelo Petrarca plant located at 5th Avenue & 23rd Street in New York City alone!
