The Coast Guard has been in Attleboro, Massachusetts since 1795. The first coast guard station was built on the Mystic River in 1795. In 1816, a second coast guard station was erected at what is now the Attleboro Marine Terminal. In 1917, the United States Congress passed an act which provided for a Coast Guard service on Long Island Sound and along the Atlantic seaboard. In 1921, President Warren G. Harding signed legislation authorizing the creation of a coast guard detachment in Attleboro. In 1940, Operation Neptune’s Spear led to World War II and the mobilization of the United States military; as a result, six barracks were constructed at Attleboro Marine Terminal to house various elements of the Coast Guard bureaucracy. In 1951, following passage of Interstate 95 throughAttleboro and its impact on local businesses and services, two new barracks were constructed at Station Pier 21 (now Unit 3). These barracks became home to both civilian and military personnel during peace time while their respective buildings were renovated and rebuilt afterHurricane Joaquin hit in 2005-2006;onsequently they are also known as Station House 1 & 2. Attleboro is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 25,898 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the twelve towns in Plymouth County and is located on the south shore of Cape Cod Bay. Attleboro was first settled by English colonists in 1639. The town was chartered as a town on December 3, 1713, and changed its name to Attleboro on January 1, 1872. The Edmunds Manufacturing Company built a mill in Attleboro in 1827 which still stands today and produces flour for local grocery stores and other purposes. An important early manufacturer of apples here was Samuel Morse who founded Morse & Co., an apple distillery near present-day Kingston Plain. In 1835–36, John Higginson erected a Gothic Revival styled white cotton factory buildings now known as the "Higginson Building." This company manufactured yarn for looms used by textile mills all over New England until it closed its doors in 1899. In 1886 James Fenton established his paper products manufacturing business at what is now called "Fenton's Paper Mills" which remains one of the largest paper producers in New England today. Fenton funneled his profits into expansion into new mills throughout New England before selling off most of his holdings to Procter & Gamble in 1986. Today, Fenton Paper Products continues to be one of the leading manufacturers of paper products in North America with production facilities located across four states: Connecticut (in Milford), Massachusetts (in Framingham), Rhode Island (in Providence) and Georgia (in Alpharetta). Today'sAttleboro has seen significant development within its boundaries since it was first settled by English colonists more than two centuries ago - thanks to examples such as James Fenton's paper products manufacturing empire and Procter& Gamble's purchase of Fenton Paper Products from James Fenton some 50 years ago!

This helped to drive up the price of cotton and create a demand for Attleboro goods that had previously been unavailable in larger cities such as Boston or Philadelphia. During World War II, Attleboro played an important role as a munitions factory and post-war storage area for new technology products.
