Attleboro, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,752 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Boston metropolitan area. It was incorporated on April 20, 1834. The land that now Attleboro was first settled by the Abenaki people and then by English colonists in 1636 when they arrived from England as part of the Plymouth Colony settlement. The first known white man to live in what is now Attleboro was John Winthrop in 1639. At this time, there were only a few miles ofPATH (the precursor to modern Route 128) and no water or dispensary available for settlers east of Boston. In 1774, Caleb Strong moved his family from Framingham to Attleboro after purchase of 2 lots on which he built their home today's First Baptist Church and School Building (now also used as a private home). Attleboro became an official town in 1834 with Nathaniel Hawthorne as its first mayor and three trustees; one served each year until the office became an elected position full-time in 1840 due to population growth within the new town limits which paralleled those of Worcester County. Attleborough's early years were difficult because it lacked access to good farming land west of Boston so most residents did not move away until after World War II when larger farms began moving into central Massachusetts dating back to before Indian Removal Policy created eastern Massachusetts as a reservations area for Native Americans. Attleboro was first settled in 1630 by the Attleborough family. The town was named after John Attleborough, a Protestant leader in the Pequot War. The town's first post office was established in 1635. In 1784, the town became part of Middlesex County and remained so until 1959 when it became part of Quincy County.
