Attleboro, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,527 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the towns in Plymouth County and it lies on the border of Plymouth and Attleboro Counties. The first Europeans to visit Attleboro were John Winthrop and his party in 1630. The town was first settled by English Puritans in 1635. In 1774, when Boston suffered from an attack by rebels led by Sam Adams, many people from Attleboro fled to nearby Wellesley. The well-to-do withdrew to Wadsworth House on Beacon Hill for safety until things calmed down. In 1853, a railroad line was built through Attleboro connecting it with Boston via Northaven and Westborough. This opened up more trade and job opportunities for locals. A gristmill was built in 1859 and became one of the city's most important mills; its products included flour, malt, sugar beets, cheese and other goods until it closed down in 1923 due to economic difficulties caused by World War II. Attleborough Elementary School opened its doors on September 1st 1954 as part of what would become an ongoing community initiative called "A Better Future". Designed by Edward Haughton (1906-1987), who also designed much of downtown Boston’s early 20th century architecture including City Hall/ State House/Nowing Garden Plaza – this unique school served students from prekindergarten through eighth grade until 2003 when delivery service ended because of budget cuts imposed by then Superintendent Driscoll Kelleher Sr.. It continued operations as a daycare while plans were made to redevelop the property into housing units after years of neglect during Driscoll's tenure as superintendent which saw increasing numbers of families moving out into neighborhoods away from schools; however these efforts have yet to materialize After more than 25 years since opening - A Better Future has finally come to an end!
