The group decided to establish their own police department and hired a constable, John Church. In 1840, they elected to change their name to Agawam Police Department and started using the term "Agawam" instead of "Boston." On July 1, 1846, Mayor Edward Sutherlin authorized the purchase of new equipment for the department including an armory and three horse cars. On November 5,1847, Agawam became part of Worcester County when it was split off from Boston Township. On February 2nd, 1850 Sheriff George Fenton transferred office from Boston Township to Worcester County under what is known as The Founding Act which abolished township government in Massachusetts. This act gave Worcester County jurisdiction over all towns within its borders regardless of whether they chose to join it or not. The first criminal case handled by Agawam Police Department was a robbery that occurred on October 9th 1849 at about 4:00 PM when two men entered into a store at 71 Main Street without paying for goods they had purchased. One man held up another person while another took money from the safe and left through an open door leaving behind some merchandise. Starting in 1850s there were several small reductions in number of officers due mainly to retirements or death within our departmental population (around 50% during this time). However due to increasing crimes against society as well as technological advancements such as motion pictures being used for law enforcement one officer was added per shift until 1909 when this increased limit was lifted and now there are six officers per shift (+1 reserve) across all departments combined!

The town was originally named for General John Byng and his wife, Susannah (née Agawam), who were the first Europeans to live in what is now Hampshire County. Prior to its incorporation, it lay within what is now Watertown. In 1851 Agawam had a population of 1,658; by 1870 it had grown to 3,433. In 1969-1970Agawam lost its status as aTown and became an unincorporated community again under state law which allows towns to remain inactive if they have no resident population or if their boundaries are modified by an act of the Massachusetts Legislature without voter approval. Agawam, or Auburn, was a town in Massachusetts Bay Colony. It was located on the north bank of the Charles River, about twelve miles (19 km) east of Boston and about six miles (10 km) west of Cambridge. The first schoolmaster in Agawam was Samuel Sewall. In 1640, William Bradford purchased some additional land in Agawam from Nicholas Fortunato and started to farm it himself. He later became one of the most successful colonists in Plymouth Colony and helped found New England's first college, Dartmouth College
