After World War II ended in 1945, the navy experienced significant reductions in its size due to budgetary constraints; however it has since regained some its former glory through contributions to many military campaigns around the world over subsequent decades (e.g., Operation Neptune Spear).

Agawam, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 3,781 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1636 by Roger Williams and his small group of Puritans who left Providence, Rhode Island to found their own settlement on the shores of Lake George. The name Agawam comes from "agog" which means "a place where one can get water." In 1795, Agawam had a population of only 162 people; however it grew rapidly due to its strategic location as an agricultural center between Worcester and Hartford townships and as a result became one of the most populous towns in Middlesex County by 1800. By 1810 it had reached 2,000 people. In 1834 Douglass Grosvenor donated land for what would become Agawam Academy which quickly became one of the leading independent academies in New England. The school closed in 1903 but reopened as the University School of Agriculture & Mechanic Arts in 1934 after being purchased by Emerson College (now Emerson University). After World War II there were plans to make Agawam into a city but these were later scrapped when it was determined that having such a large population would conflict with other considerations such as maintaining farmland for agriculture and creating housing developments that could accommodate more than 1,000 residents. As of the 2010 Census, there were 3,781 people living in Agawamtownsend-on-Hudson Valley ZIP Code 02139; this makes up 49% of all town residents and 82% of all households overall. Of note are: (1) 469 live within walking distance or less of local grocery stores; (2) 575 businesses account for 96%of total economic activity; (3) nearly half (45%)of all jobs are supported through two or fewer employers The average household size is 2.64 children with an average age 23 years old while single adults have an average Household income $80K+. Agawam is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1639 by Puritan settlers from England and its name comes from an ancient Indian word meaning "calm place." Its first church was built in 1640. A printing press was established here in 1736 and the town had its first school in 1747. In 1815, Agawam became part of Harvard University's college system as a separate village. In 1840, when Agawam incorporated as a town, it had a total population of 1,500 residents. The main industry then was agriculture; however, this changed with the arrival of new industries such as manufacturing and textiles during the late 19th century. In 1916, Agawam merged with nearby Arlington to form what is now Arlington-Agawam Association. The post office at Agawam opened on October 24, 1827 and continued operating until December 14, 1862; it was replaced by a trunk line telephone company which moved from Beverly to Agawam on November 15th 1913). The first African American to live permanently in America arrived in Agawam in 1865 when Augustus Epps came ashore from steamboat SS "Aquila" with his family for resettlement purposes following Hurricane Andrew's damage to Jamaica Plain.. He worked on land owned by John Quincy Adams (the father of Ulysses S Grant) until he bought his own farm two years later.. Reverend Leo Pillsbury also came to live permanently hereabouts after working for many years as pastor of Congregational services elsewhere .. Most recently there has been an influx of Hispanic/Latino immigrants who are employed primarily through small businesses within the local agricultural economy1
