The National Guard of Agawam, Massachusetts traces its roots back to 1784 when a detachment from the town's regular militia was called into service to support the Continental Army during the War for Independence. The unit served until 1787, when it was disbanded. In 1825, Town Meeting passed an ordinance authorizing the formation of a "National Guard Battalion" in order to provide law and order in the community. On November 10, 1825, the battalion was constituted and organized under the command of Major General John Brownell. At this time, there were only two companies ofagnies authorized by Town Meeting: one at Northampton and one at Westboro. On October 26, 1830, another ordinance authorizing a battalion of three hundred men was passed; however, no company was ever organized. In 1834-35 new ordinances were passed authorizing additions to or discharges from the National Guard for political reasons; however no company was ever created. In 1840-41 yet another ordinance authorized formation of companies outside of town limits; however again no company was formed. In 1845-46 additional ordinances were passed authorizing national guard units stationed on Long Island (now New York) for purposes such as providing military aid in disputes between New York and her neighbors; however again no company ever formed. In 1850-51 a new ordinanceauthorized organization ofCompanies under Selective Service Law with headquarters located in Alton; however only sixty men enlisted and their unit never completed its training program. It wasn’t until 1861 that an act legalizing National Guardsmen serving as “volunteers” within Massachusetts became effective which allowed these soldiers to be transferred from Connecticut National Guard Units stationed in Rhode Island into Agawam’s regimented force without having to reenlistment or serve out their full term . After the Civil War ended there continued sporadic acts of violence throughout Northeastern United States involving members or former members of both militias (and sometimes volunteer groups) called "the black troops." This violence escalated after Reconstruction began which targetted white Republicans who had been Reconstruction administrators — first Black Democrats then white Republicans — instead of Confederate/ Rebel sympathizers now living among themselves as free Americans restorationists see themselves as second class citizensrique citizens being targeted because they are Republican Party loyalists Russian émigrés resident during wartime
