AgaWam, founded in 1762 as an agricultural settlement on the border of present-day Massachusetts and Rhode Island, was one of the earliest coffee towns in America. Maga Coffee Plantation was founded by Nicholas Merrill in 1792. The first maga beans were roasted at the plantation in 1806. Maga Coffee became a national icon after being featured in Douglas Fairbanks's 1916 silent film version of Tom Sawyer. In 1951, maga beans were exported to Japan for the first time. Since then, maga coffee has become popular all over the world. In Agawam, MA, there is a museum dedicated to maga coffee history and culture which offers tours of the plantation and mill complex as well as exhibits about the production process.

Agawam is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,699 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Worcester–Fenway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Agawam were two brothers named John and Samuell Stickney who arrived in 1636 from Ipswich, Suffolk, England. They built a small cabin on the east side of present-day Agawam Pond. In 1637 they married Martha Winslow and started to farm their land around what is now Agawam Pond. In 1643 they had another child, Samuel Stickney Jr., and began to sell their land for grain. In 1768 John Dodge bought some of the acreage that would become Agawam from the Stickneys for $1/acre (this was before there were any towns in Middlesex County). He built a house on this property and called it "Dodge's Hill". This house still stands today as an historical marker near where Dodge owned his land until he sold it to Nicholas Noyes in 1827 for $5/acre (Noyes also bought some additional land around what is now Dodge's Hill). From 1827 to 1845 it was part of Lynnfield Township; then from 1845 to 1957 it was part of Worcester Township. On July 15th, 1957,Agawam became an unincorporated community when its ZIP code was changed from 01826 to 07003. In 1958 Morse & Sons Nursery opened up shop on Main Street which remains one of the few businesses remaining in town today. The nursery closed down in 2006 but reopened as Old Morse Store after being renovated and enlarged inside and out by several local residents including author Leslie McFarlane who resides across the street from them.. Today Old Morse Store sells local produce along with souvenirs related to our history such as postcards back home during those years
Agawam was a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. It was founded by the Pileaton family in 1636 and increased in population over time. The town was named for the Agawam River, which flowed through it. The first store in Agawam opened on December 1, 1785. In 1868, Agawam became the townsite of North Adams to keep its own name after an act of the Massachusetts General Court transferred all of Middlesex County to that state.
