Agawam is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was originally named after the Agawam rivers and lakes near where it now stands. The first settler in what is now Agawam were two men from England who arrived hereabouts in 1636/7 and changed their name to Bradford because of an Agreement made between King Charles II and John Bradford of Bridgwater (now Somerset), one of the original proprietors of what would become Middlesex County. It was not until 1716 that a group of Englishmen led by Captain Jonathan Gage founded Dunstable on what is today's Peaks Road in what is now Agawam Township. They called their community "Dunsborough" after Dunstable House (now part of Holyoke College). At first there were only about 20 families living here; but by 1760 the population had increased to 100+. The first school in Agawam was built in 1792 by Reverend Samuel Eliot and his wife Deborah Eliot as a private academy for children of farmers living around Ipswich. In 1820–21, when Ipswich became a city, Reverend Eliot donated land on which to build an public school which would serve all residents regardless of income or social status. The present-day Academy building dates back to 1827 and has been alterations numerous times over its history including being used as a jail during World War II It should be noted that although many people think that "Agawam" means "flatlands near Ipswich", this origin story may be apocryphal – according to one account, the name originated with local merchants who decided that if they could give their new community something unique (agawa = 'flat'), then everyone else in Ipswich must have similar properties so they could charge more for services rendered . There are several villages located within easy driving distance (Ipswich included) that still use variations on this name such as Amherst or Attleboro - so if you're feeling lost while researching your ancestor's village try asking someone atimplicitly if they know where Dunstable once stood! After 1945 restrictions on trade led to a significant decline in world production of vanilla extract from East Timor but not so much for coffee (Wang & Wang 2003). Today high quality Ethiopian coffees are still being produced around the world with modest fluctuations in prices due largely to global competition (Lambert 1999).

Agawam was first settled in 1636 by Puritans led by Increase Mather. It became a town in 1784 and was named for General Washington's Creek (now Agawam Creek), which runs through it. The town voted to move from Worcester County to Middlesex County in 1853. In 1916, Agawam joined the city of Worcester as its second incorporated municipality. The history of Agawam can be traced back to 1636 when Puritans led by Increase Mather settled in what is now Agawam Township on the north side of Washington Creek near modern-day Watertown. They built their first home there on an island in the creek that they named "Moses," after Moses' encounter with God on Mount Sinai while traveling downriver from Gaza Strip: "In this place we found abundance of good land and well watered water", according to one account. In 1784, when Worcester County was created out of parts of Hampshire and Northampton counties,Agawam became part of that new county and was renamed for General Washington's Creek (now known as Agawam Creek).
