Since the Revolutionary War, the Massachusetts militia has been a part of the state's defense. The modern-day Massachusetts Army National Guard is one of its most recent incarnations. The unit was first organized on November 1, 1775, and became operational on December 12th. Prior to that it was known as "The Militia Company." In 1812, the regiment was redesignated "The 2nd Regiment of Artillery." In 1846, it was reorganized as "The 3rd Regiment of Artillery." At this time the regiment became an infantry regiment and concurrently changed its name to "The Agawam Brigade," which lasted until 1958 when it reverted back to its original name once again. Today, there are three regiments in the Massachusetts Army National Guard: The 129th Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 131st Infantry Regiment (Infantry), and 133rd Infantry Regiment (Artillery). Agawam was a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is now part of the Agawam village of Wellesley. The town developed on land that was originally taken by the English from the Wampanoag people in 1636 and 1718. The first permanent settler in Agawam was Capt. Israel Putnam, who arrived there with his family on December 12, 1636. He built a house near what is now Granite Corner Road and named it after himself, Agawam (meaning "estate of Putnam"). By early February 1637, however, Putnam had died and his widow Hester moved to nearby Northampton with her two young children; she renamed her new home Wellesley after herself. The earliest white settlers in Agawam were Nathaniel Maverick and John Eliot; they became prominent members of the selectmen's committee for purchasing land for development and donated land to the town on which it stands today. They also helped build well known landmarks like Granite Corner Road and White Rock Pond. In 1639-40 Amos Ward started farming around present day Granite Corner Road corner with Wellesley River; he named his farm Westborough because of its location west of Boston Common where he believed Harvard College would be located when founded in 1536. In fact, agrarian society did not really take off until much later in New England when towns began to arise as centers of commerce rather than agriculture
