Westminster is a town in Prince Georges County, Maryland, United States. The population was 13,912 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1784 as part of what would become Frederick County. Westminster became an incorporated city in 1866 and its mayor is elected directly by residents rather than via election from a slate of candidates. In 1916, Westminster became the capital of Maryland when it became the state's new capital after being chosen as the site for the new capitol building by a vote of its citizens. As such, Westminster has been both the seat of government for Prince Georges County and also home to many historical events that have shaped the county and its people. The town first grew up around two small farms outside today's town limits. The first permanent settler in what is now Westminster was Nicholas Griffiths who arrived onancock Island about 1784 with his family and erected a cabin thereabouts. He named his property "Greenmount" after Mount Holyoke College which he had attended while living in Massachusetts prior to moving downriver to join his family hereabouts. By 1800, Greenmount had become one of three farms near where present-day downtown stands; it remained so until 1814 when Sir George Washington purchased land east of Greenmount and built himself a house thereon as part of his efforts to establish peaceful cooperation between Native Americans and European investors on Catoctin Creek (now known as Inner Harbor). It wasn't until 1821 that President James Ketchum authorized construction of what would eventually become Westminster Schoolhouse on South Main Street across from present-day White House Park - now known as Ketchum Oval - which soon proved indispensable for local students commuting into Frederick County for school every day before then using North Main Street (later called Independence Avenue) just north of downtown for travel back home each evening thereafter! Southwest corner lot #5 on Third Street east/west from current Church Road thus became home plateauside beginning May 6th 1830 thru Present day...a time capsule still extant today & reminding us all this happened during quiet times :) When NW Corner lot #6 west off 3rd street was acquired adjoining SW Corner lot #5 December 9th 1830 by John Allmonde along with lots NW corner lot #8 & SE corner lot #9 November 1st 1830 Dutchman Cornelius de Witt donated parcels totaling 4 acres including SW Corner Lot 5 thereby creating 2 squares totaling 12x24 feet bordered by High School Road onNW & SE Quadrants...all this happened within minutes or hours following purchase notice being sent outvia E mail blast w/agenda fullof pics
