Westminster is a borough in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington metropolitan area and is located on the southern edge of Baltimore City. Westminster is bordered by Howard County to the north, Harford County to the northeast, Carroll County to the east and south, and Anne Arundel County to the west. The first permanent settler in what would become Westminster was Nicholas de Montfort who built a cabin on a hill overlooking Westminster Lake in 1698. In 1785 John Smith established himself as one of two proprietors of Alexandria Township in Prince George's County with his house on West Pratt Street located just outside present-day Westminster boundaries. By 1800 there were 173 people living within Alexandropolis Township limits when it was organized into Prince George's County. In 1814 General Robert Ewell ordered all males under 21 years old from Alexandria Township for military service during the War of 1812 because British troops had occupied that community along with several other areas in eastern Maryland. As a result of this order many residents left their homes and took up residence in nearby Bowie or Cumberland Counties which were then parts of Canada; some returned home after hostilities ended but most remained in exile until Ulysses S Grant arrived in America as an American general during Reconstruction and ordered their return homeibrigadely effective May 6, 1868; they fully resettled within Prince George's County by 1870 due largely to new social programs sponsored by Chancellor Andrew Walnutt before he became governor (1871-75). After Statehood both Frederick Douglass and Elijah Pinkney served as mayor from 1865 until 1865 when they were succeeded by James Waddell who also served as president pro tempore from 1866 until his death on October 5th, 1872; thereafter no mayoralty term was held for more than four years except for three terms ending December 31st each year due to lack of quorum (the Borough Council could not meet because no member could be registered for an election). There is no one definitive answer to the question of who was the first person to live in Westminster, Maryland. However, there are several theories as to why this area became known as "Westminster." One theory suggests that it was because of John Baltimore, who came to the area in 1751 and established a small town here. Another theory suggests that it was because of James Blair, who moved from Scotland to Westminster in 1785 and built a house here. A third theory suggests that it was because of Colonel John Smith, who arrived in 1802 and started farming here. The fourth theory suggests that it was because of General George Washington, who visited Westminster in 1799 and made his home here. All these theories have some evidence behind them, but they all remain nameless for now. Regardless of where the first people lived or what their reasons were for moving to this area, over time this community grew steadily and began becoming known for its beautiful architecture and interesting history. In 1868, when Prince Georges County became part of Maryland, Westminster became an official municipality within the new county. This increased its importance as a place where government officials could reside andpolitical activity continued to take place here until 1973 when it officially turned into a borough within Prince Georges County again following a referendum vote by residents. At present day, southwest London's only other borough is Harford County outside of Washington D.C., which means that Westminster has long been underrated as one of southeastern Maryland's most important communities.
