Westminster, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 16,824. It is the seat of Prince George's County government and includes most of the University Park neighborhood. The original name for the town was West Mills. The first settler in what is now Westminster was Edward Berryman. He built a cabin on a small stream near present-day Mount Vernon Place in 1784. Berryman named his property "Westminster" after his home country of England. The first post office in Westminster was established on July 14, 1814, by James Auld and Anthony Woodbridge under the name West Mills Post Office. On October 3rd, 1835, it became part of Prince George's County when it was organized from portions of Frederick and Carroll Counties. During World War II, Westminster served as an airfield for RAF Station Coningsby which operated out of nearby Balch Field until 1945; then as an army base until 1967 when it closed down completely due to budget cuts that followed America's entry into the Vietnam War. In 1970–71 Westminster received city status from Washington D.C.; however much growth did not take place until 2000 when Mayor John Fenton led bills through both chambers creating several new neighborhoods within town boundaries: University Park (the old heartland), Annapolis Hills (the upscale area located east of US 1), Bowietown (southwest corner bounded by US 1/MD 5 and MD 54), Northwood (west side bounded by US 1/MD 5 and MD 54) and even adding parts of Upper Darby to its limits making it one large municipality with multiple neighborhoods inside its borders! In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place downtown including construction of a new library and retail buildings as well as active development along US 1 westward towards Bowietown which has resulted in increased traffic congestion around downtown boundaries!
