Westminster is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,884 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area. Westminster was founded in 1751 as a small settlement on the eastern edge of what is now Baltimore Township by Virginians who were fleeing British Rule. In 1831, it became an incorporated town and later became a city after being reincorporated in 1954. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Westminster were Virginians who were fleeing British Rule and coming down from the Blue Ridge Mountains. They named their new community "Westminster" after King George II of England's capital, London. By 1751, there were only 100 residents living here; however, within five years, this number had grown to over 1,000 people because of the influx of Scots-Irish immigrants and others seeking refuge from British rule. The early pioneers cultivated land that today forms much of downtown Windsor Heights on western outskirts of Westminster proper while also beginning to build homes around what would become their town center. In 1831, when Frederick Douglass moved to America from Scotland as part of his politicalARE (Allyship for African Reactions) campaign and began working as an editor for The North Star newspaper in Philadelphia before moving to Baltimore with his family in 1835-36, he came through Westminster on his way southward - one day early enough so he could walk unaided into centraltown where abolitionist John Brown was being heldprisoner (see Skirmish at Harper's Ferry).
