Air Force Deployed Gift History in Westminster, Maryland began in the early 1960's when Air Force Colonel James A. "Jim" Reedy and Mrs. Emmet D. King set up a small gift shop on the grounds of The Westminster Presbyterian Church. From that store, they ported the giving begun for USAF personnel stationed worldwide. The RAF gave back withOperation Goodwill so many RAF members from England came to give back what they could and contributed items like clothes, tools, radios and much more. In addition to gifts, airmen also received Operation Gratitude which was initiated by then-AFM Lieutenant General Curtis LeMay after he learned about the RAF's donations of food and other items during World War II. This program resulted in over 2 million pounds being sent directly to Allied war efforts! Westminster is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Frederick, DC Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on a bend in the Susquehanna River and was founded by men from Cecil County, Maryland in 1783 as Westministerville. At its peak in the late 19th century it had a population of 10,000–20,000 people. In 1881 it became part of Baltimore City; after that it declined rapidly and by 1910 had only 1,500 residents remaining. Today Westminster has a small business district and several churches including Emmanuel Lutheran (established 1782), First Baptist (1812), St John's Episcopal (founded 1865), and Presbyterian (1792). The town's most famous resident was John Fenton who served as Mayor from 1889 to 1893.
