Takoma Park is a small town in Maryland, United States. It is located on the border of Montgomery and Prince George's counties, about 12 miles (19 km) west of Washington D.C. Takoma Park was incorporated as a town on July 1, 1899, from part of Bethesda Township. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. The name Takoma comes from two German words meaning "place where tapers light" or "safe place". The first word likely refers to the fact that the surrounding countryside is hilly and there are few trees. The second word means "forested area". In 1814, General James Harnett moved his family from North Carolina to what is now Takoma Park after losing his land in a military campaign against Native Americans. Between 1825 and 1830, other families also settled in this area: John Sargent purchased 100 acres (40 ha) east of present day Takoma Park; Captain David Lewis built a log cabin on what is now Old Georgetown Road; Ebenezer Higgins bought 10 acres (4 ha) northeast of what is now Midvale Road; Samuel Fuller acquired 20 acres (8 ha) north-northwest of Midvale Road; Amos Eaton platted 500 acres (200 ha), including all or part of present day Montrose Avenue and Sawmill Road near Bethesda Creek In 1832–33 Colonel Nathaniel Lyon surveyed lands southward along National Pike to form Montgomery County while he was stationed at Fort McHenry in Baltimore. On December 17, 1832–January 8, 1833 Lyon submitted plans for an early community called Friendship which would include 400 lots - one acre = $10 - with housing for 30 people each within two years. However these plans never reached fruition because Montgomery County did not become organized until January 24, 1840 when it was created by combining Prince George's County with Frederick COUNTY When Friendship failed to take off due to its small size, three men — Augustus Kelley Jr., Hiram Spencer Sr., and John Waddell — decided to start fresh with new ideas for a village called Valley Forge which would include 575 lots - one acre = $25 - divided into 25ouses/families with 40 slaves each/a total population up to 800 people . Valley Forge became reality on October 15th 1781 when 300 pioneers set out from Falls Church Dirigible Station led by Captain Anthony Wayne under the leadership OF Major General Philip Schuyler under orders FROM President James Ketchum unlike most American colonizers who traveled by horseback or wagon train followed by Indian scouts
