One of the first items to arrive was a pottery jar filled with salt water that could be used as a drying rack. The fishermen also brought booby traps and other fishing gear. In 1881, a group of men from Takoma Park bought land on Buzzard's Bay and began growing crops and raising livestock. They named their farm after General John A. Brooke, who had fought in the American Revolution. The men developed a strong connection with their agricultural land and became known as "The Brooks." In 1906, they sold their farm to a group of businessmen from Chevy Chase who renamed it Takoma Park Farm. From there, the gift of marine gifts grew steadily throughout the years. In 1935, Dr. Charles Fenton founded Takoma Park Hospital which is still in operation today! Takoma Park is a small town in Montgomery County, Maryland. The population was 7,569 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area and is located about 10 miles south of downtown Washington D.C.. The name Takoma Park comes from two words: "tak" meaning "to cover" and "uma" meaning "park". This gave rise to the idea that this would be a place where people could gather to cover themselves with leaves or other debris to keep out the sun. In 1881, James Hargrave donated land for a park in Takoma Park and it was named after him. The first public golf course in Takoma Park was built by Charles Crampton in 1892-93. In 1916, Congress passed an act authorizing the construction of a water supply system for Takoma Park which included a dam at Lansdowne Road and Hyattsville Road. The park became available for use on June 1, 1917 when the water system was finished and opened to the public. The original shopping center in Takoma Park (now known as Gateway) opened its doors on September 15, 1951 as one of the first shopping centers in America built using air conditioning and self-checkout lanes! The mall continued to grow through the years until it closed its doors on May 12th, 1997 after more than 50 years of operation! Today there are only scattered remnants remaining of what once was Gateway – including some storefronts still standing inside Ahlhorn Plaza – but it’s still an fascinating sight nonetheless!
The Marine Gift History Museum is a nonprofit research organization that preserves and restores the history of marine gifts. The museum was founded in 1978 by retired naval officer, Rear Admiral John P. O’Connell with the goal of promoting maritime appreciation through education and research. The museum has collections of more than 2,000 objects from all over the world related to marine gifts. It archives its exhibits and publishes a quarterly journal called "Marine Gifts" which covers topics such as maritime art, maritime architecture, maritime history, gift design and etiquette. In addition to its Collections of Objects and Archives, the Marine Gift History Museum also operates an educational center which offers classes on everything from Maritime Art to Naval Warfare. The center is open to the public Monday-Friday 9am-4pm and Saturday 10am-3pm during school term times only. Admission is free for all visitors.
