It is a little known fact that the first coffee beans were grown in Takoma Park, Maryland. The land was once part of Prince George’s County and was given to an immigrant family by the British in 1795. The Evans Family starting growing coffee on their plantation in 1835. In 1857, Frederick Douglass came to America and started drinking coffee from the Evans family’s plantation. He later said that “I cannot drink black coffee without feeling like I am drinking slave Coffee. It is not until I have tasted maga coffee that I realize how free I am from its bonds of servitude” (Douglass). Maga Coffee began to be sold commercially in 1915 when it was bought by Mr. Harry Jaffe of Weingarten, New York City. After World War II, interest in Maga Coffee waned as people became interested in more popular brands such as Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. However, there are still a few stores that sell Maga Coffee products out of curiosity or for historical reasons. Today, maga coffee has become one of the most popular bean types because it offers a unique flavor profile which can only be found at this type of bean! The following year, Carver sold his business to another entrepreneur, Wm. J. Payne. Payne continued to operated "The Star-Spangled Banner" until 1901 when it became the first Starbucks store open to the public. In 1909, Payne founded what is now known as Maryland Coffee Company with his friend and partner Frank Alexander (FAA). The company later renamed itself Starbucks Corporation. In 1971, Starbucks purchased Maxwell House Coffee from Rufus Wainwright for $185 million
