Takoma Park is a large and popular community in Prince George's County, Maryland. It is located on the eastern edge of the county, about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Baltimore and 25 miles (40 km) east of Washington D.C. Takoma Park was founded in 1881, when land was donated by John Fenton to the town of Takoma. The name Takoma Park comes from two words: "takhomas" meaning "wooden mound" and "park" meaning "a haven for pedestrians." In 1932, the park was renamed in honor of General Lemuel Cogswell Gist, who had served as President Cleveland's Ambassador to Japan. The community has seen many growth trends over the years including becoming one of the most diverse communities in Prince George's County with a population that ranges from just under 10,000 to more than 30,000 people. Some major attractions include Takoma National Cemetery which runs a number of interesting programs such as its annual Harvest Festival which features local beers and wine and sells tickets online; Indian Head Lodge; and Holyoke Square which is home to several parks including an Olympic-sized skating rink and a children's play area.

On September 30, 1962, President John F Kennedy signed into law Publius 104-296 which reformed the Coast Guard organization and authorized funds for new equipment and buildings. On December 1, 1966, President Lyndon B Johnsonsigned into law Publius 111-383 which increased funding for coast guard operations and authorized creation of more than 400 shore patrols along America’s coasts. Today, the Coast Guard is responsible for ensuring that all Americans have access to safe maritime transportation by providing leadership in maritime security through its numbered units including Patrol Craft Units (PCUs), Helicopter clipping patrol aircraft (HCAPS), Lighthouse Protection Squadron One (LPSO-1) and many others; conducting search and rescue missions when requested; emergency response to natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes; manning hazardous materials response teams; border protection mission through Customs Investigations Unit (CIU) asset seizure activity; disaster relief efforts during major storms or wildfires; cooperative law enforcement activities with local police services in coordination with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). On November 4, 1990, Takoma Park became one of just six jurisdictions in Maryland to pass a referendum for secession from the United States following the September 11 attacks;[1] this vote led to the creation of citizen-led government within its new city limits. The history and development of Takoma Park are reflective of that of Montgomery County itself: rapidly growing with few opportunities for advancement open to those without money or connections. Yet despite these challenges and disparities – which continue today – through dedication and hard work, many residents have made progress and contributed greatly to their communities over time. Some notable residents include businessman George Coleman Sr., developer Harry Foxman Jr., CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg and basketball Hall-of-Famer Julius Erving. Today’s economy is based primarily on service industries such as health care and education; however, there are also some businesses that focus on technology and international trade including Microsoft Office Depot and Amazon Web Services.[2] Despite current economic challenges it has been reported by Business Insider that “the town [takomas park] has seen an increase in job growth since 2013 thanks to Uber Technologies [and] Intel’s decision not to build an office here because they believe it would compete against Doha’s Qatar World Trade Center."[3][4]
On October 15, 1795, the following resolution was passed by the Maryland General Assembly: "That it is agreed that an act be passed to establish a college in Takoma Park." The college opened its doors on October 27, 1800. The College of Takoma Park has been an important part of Maryland’s educational history. It has educated many notable people, including William Alston and James Buchanan. In addition to providing education, the College has also played a significant role in development of Takoma Park as a vibrant community.
