The United States Army has a rich history in Takoma Park, Maryland. The community was once a military stronghold and today the army is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. The army's presence began with the creation of the Takoma Park Regiment on October 1, 1775. The regiment was made up of volunteer soldiers from Takoma Park and other surrounding communities. It served as an infantry unit until 1800 when it was redesignated as a cavalry unit. On September 11, 1861, the army garrisoned Takoma Park for protection during the American Civil War. After Confederate forces attacked Federal troops at Second Bull Run near Takoma Park on July 12, 1862, the army ordered all residents to leave their homes. Most of those who remained were forced to take shelter in barns and churches until late into the night. On November 3, 1862, General Ambrose Burnside ordered all civilian volunteers within two miles of Fairfax Court House to join his forces or be turned over to Confederate forces. In response, more than 2200 citizens gathered at First Presbyterian Church in Takoma Park for morning prayer service before leaving for Fairfax Court House. While they were there they heard gunshots ring out and realized that Confederate forces had invaded their town. In 1864 Union troops occupied Takoma Park after General Ulysses S Grant's march through Northern Virginia caused many civilian casualties including many women and children who were taken into slavery by Confederate armies while their families fled southward. From 1865-1867 Major General George Biddle's brigade stationed here helped suppress riots among local blacksmiths following emancipation proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln on April 14th 1865 which ended slavery in America north of Mason-Dixon line。 After World War IIakia ended1945 all military personnel left except for a few hundred civilians who continued living in barracks along east side field Road until 1948 when Arlington County purchased these land from US Military Commanders GIs & SF Retired pay rolls only if you have DD card

The Takoma Park, Maryland army gift history begins with Major General John A. Brooke in 1861 when he was appointed as the first commanding general of the 2nd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. The regiment had been raised in 1847 and fought in the Mexican-American War before being mustered into service for the American Civil War on December 12, 1861. The regiment served under Brooke until April 1865 when he was killed during a battle at Appomattox Court House. Commanding General Ulysses S. Grant then appointed Lieutenant Colonel George Buford to take over Brooke's position. The following year, on November 3, 1862, Lieutenant Colonel George Buford was promoted to colonel and given command of the 1st Maryland Infantry Regiment which had been mustered into service two weeks earlier than the 1st Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. From January 1863 until March 1865, Buford commanded both regiments in Union Army Service during the war against Confederate States of America (CSA). In May 1865, after having commanded both regiments for three years and nine months, Buford retired from military service with the rank of colonel and moved to Takoma Park where he died in 1895.
Takoma Park is a small town in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was estimated to be 27,600 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore region. The town began as a small farming community on the northern edge of Takoma Park following its founding in 1818 by Captain John Smith and his family. The area that now makes up Takoma Park was first settled by Germans, who arrived in the early 1800s from what is now Germany. In 1828, Takoma Park was incorporated as a village and remained so until it became a town in 1907. According to the 2000 census, black residents make up 26% of the town's population while whites make up 72%. As of 2009, there were also 10% Hispanics and 6% Asians living in Takoma Park. Takoma Park, Maryland was a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 26,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Frederick, DC metropolitan area. Takoma Park was incorporated on July 1, 1876. Takoma Park is located in southeasternPrince George's County and is bordered by Takoma National Forest to the north and east; Silver Spring to the south and west; Bethesda to the northwest; and Hyattsville to the southeast. The community began as a small farming village near Silver Spring before being annexed by nearby Bowie on December 12, 1884. In 1907, Takoma Park became an incorporated municipality with a population of 30 citizens. On January 1, 1913 it was renamed Takoma Park after then-President Woodrow Wilson who had recently visited its city namesake in New Jersey. In 1938–39 during World War II much of what is now Takoma park were acquired by the government for use as land fill for military barracks near Washington Dulles Airport (now Reagan National Airport). Partially because of this development there has been some contention over how much parkland actually remains within present day Takoma Park limits (although all but 3/4ths of what once surrounded John F Kennedy Presidential Library lies within today's boundaries).
Takoma Park was officially incorporated as a town on April 14, 1867. The first post office in the town was established on May 1, 1868. In 1875, the Takoma Park Railroad was established and connected Takoma Park with the nearby city of Bethesda. The town renamed itself to Bethesda in 1886. On November 5, 1888, the city of Washington D.C. merged with Takoma Park to form one large municipality known as Washington D.C.–Takoma Park.
