It became one of the first coffeehouses in the United States to be certified as a National Historic Site in 1974. The first Starbucks opened its doors in Salisbury in 2002. In 2013, Starbucks announced it would close all of its stores across the United States due to weak sales. However, it reopened under new management in February 2014 with plans to keep most of its locations open until 2021. In 2018, Starbucks announced that it will close all of its remaining U.S.-based stores by December 2020 citing declining economic conditions worldwide and competition from Amazon Kindle books and other e-commerce services.

There were no schools or other public services until 1875 when a schoolhouse was built on Meeting House Road by Reverend Samuel Morse. By 1876, there were 10 people living in Salisbury and 5 businesses had been established including a mill and a store. In 1881, the first post office was opened in Salisbury with 11 residents mailing their letters from their homes before traveling toWashington D.C., where they could pick up mail at the U.S Post Office then take it home to send again the next day. In 1902, an agricultural company named Potomac Agricultural Company purchased 256 acres (120 ha) southeast of present-day Salisbury to build what would become known as "The Farm." It is part of the College Park–Highland Heights, MD-VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Salisbury was Christopher Jones who arrived in 1784. The town was organized on November 1, 1802 by Order of the General Assembly under the name of "Newport." Newport was renamed to Salisbury on October 15, 1814 by order of Gov. John Carroll. On July 4, 1846 Salisbury was named for General Nathaniel Phips (1758-1836), U.S. Navy Commodore and one of the commanders during the Mexican War and its aftermath who had become a hero in that conflict until his death at age 70 years old from a fever contracted while leading an army into Mexico City after defeating Manuel de la Costa y Costilla there at Chapultepec). In 1865 Salisbury became part of Frederick County when that county was created from parts of Prince George's and Baltimore Counties. In 1976 Salisbury lost its charter as a town because it did not meet all requirements set by Frederick County Commissioners Court which included having a library and fire department; these services were added to neighboring historic communities such as Hyattsville and Takoma Park within two years after they were requested by commissioners court officials overseeing those communities' growth.
