Salisbury is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Prince George's County. Salisbury is located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and is bordered to the north by Frederick County and to the east by Anne Arundel County. The first white settlers in what is now Salisbury were farmers who arrived in 1792. The town was incorporated as a village on May 12, 1821, when it was part of Prince George's County. In 1828, John Crouch built a sawmill on an artificial stream that flows through Salisbury into Chesapeake Bay. This mill became known as Crouch & Sons sawmills until 1889 when it closed down due to competition from larger mills in nearby Baltimore City. The original courthouse building was built between 1827 and 1830 by lawyer and judge Elijah Welshman for $6,000 (). Welshman served as justice of peace for Prince George's County from 1829 to 1830 and also held other judicial office during this time including commissioner of police (1826-30). This courthouse burned down in 1850 but was rebuilt with assistance from American architect James Renwick Jr.. In 1870, Prince George's County established its own court system which used Renwick’s new building until 1933 when that system was replaced by the present day Judicial Circuit Court system which uses facilities located adjacent to Salisbury High School. In 1951, General Electric began construction on one of its largest industrial projects ever – a nuclear power plant at Salisbury Township – resulting in some 1 million jobs being created throughout southeastern Maryland during that decade alone! Over thirty percent of all GE products are imported into America so much for local manufacturing! After many years of economic development at Salshire Township – helped along by our community’s strong political leadership including Mayor John Macey – we have seen our businesses grow even more: We now employ over 300 people here full-time! In 1876 a rail line was built through the town making it easier to get goods to market; this led to more businesses opening up and helped increase population by 50%. Salisbury experienced some growth during World War II as millions of people came busy working in munitions plants or being drafted into service. The postwar years were relatively quiet for Salisbury until the late 1950s when construction began on Interstate 95 which ran through the town centre. This highway caused pollution and traffic jams that plagued residents for years; eventually it was closed down due to concerns about possible flooding if it rose too high above ground level. In recent decades, Salisbury has seen consistent growth with new development coming online such as mixed-use buildings (such as apartments and condos) along With Road and a new shopping center called Gateway Mall which opened up in 2007 adjacent to Parkville High School
