Rockville is a town in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 21,811 at the 2010 census. Rockville is located on the upstream side of Calvert Creek, which forms the border between Montgomery and Prince George's counties. It is bordered by Bethesda to the north and east and Silver Spring to the south. The first permanent settler in what is now Rockville was William Carroll (1765-1847), who purchased land from James Hagerstown in 1785. In 1796, John Smith (1759-1835) constructed a mill on Elk Creek near present day Rockville Center. By 1802, David Ladd (1768-1853) had built a gristmill on Elk Creek also near present day Rockville Center. In 1814 The United States Army Corps of Engineers began construction of Fort Mifflin at what is now known as Point Lookout on Calvert Creek for use as a military post during the War of 1812 against British forces under Lieutenant Colonel Edward Braddock. Upon completion of Fort Mifflin in 1815, it became an important stopping point for travelers journeying up and down Calvert Creek before continuing their journey downstream to Washington D.C., Baltimore or Philadelphia via Georgetown or Mount Vernon Island.. In 1827 Samuel Morse (1795-1849) erected his first telegraph line from Broad Street Station in Philadelphia to Germantown through what are now Crown Heights and Silver Spring with accompanying wires extending beyond those neighborhoods into Maryland. On December 14th, 1830 Charles Babbage designed and built his Analytical Engine – one of only two working electronic machines ever created – within sight of where he lived at 7 Oneonta Road today’s Bowie Avenue in Laurelwood Village across from Bethesda High School until its demolition in 1988 following automated testing by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s Laboratory there using electron microscope technology that would have been possible then had Babbage not died aged 44 years prior while still working on his machine! Rockville is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 20,693 at the 2010 census. In 1814, Rockville was laid out as an agricultural village by Colonel Isaac Brockman with land bought from two families who had been evicted from Wheaton on account of religious beliefs. That year also saw the founding of Bethesda Asylum which served as both a madhouse and correctional facility until it closed in 1898. During World War II, many soldiers were housed here including Pfc Joseph Kappenheimer who committed suicide during training at Fort Meade in 1940 when he realized he could not be drafted into service because of his age; later renamed Potomac Park Cemetery near where he died has become one of Rockville's most popular tourist attractions despite controversy over its history In 1955, Rockville incorporated as a city under then-Governor Frederick Mifflin and began rapid growth due to its location within easy commuting distance to major metropolitan areas such as Washington D.C., Baltimoreand Philadelphia. Development continued through the late 1960s and early 1970s with much contribution from private developers following large U.S. Army Base closures that left local businesses struggling against competition from Pentagon-affiliated companies like McDonnell Douglas and Northrop Grumman . Today, Rockville remains an important center for government services, education,, business development and cultural attractions including several high-end apartment buildings completed or under construction in recent years along with numerous smaller shops, restaurants and other businesses dating back more than 125 years
