There is no doubt that the military has always been a major force in Rockville. From its early days as a small town, the community has been home to Army and Marine barracks and other military installations. The area now known as Military Road was originally called Fort Armstrong, after Colonel John Armstrong who fought in the American Revolution. The first permanent military installation in Rockville was Fort Washington on Maryland Avenue NW. It was built between 1795 and 1800 by General George Washington for his army during the War of 1812. The fort served as winter quarters for General Washington’s army and also housed an arsenal and storehouse used to supply the British forces during the war. In 1814, Fort McHenry became one of two US military posts located within Maryland Heights when it was erected on land owned by Colonel Robert Rossiter at what is now West Potomac Park NW. The fort served as headquarters of both Major General James Kalka (the commander of all southern Maryland) and Lieutenant Governor Nicholas Carroll until its destruction by fire in 1815. The next year, build began on what is todayFort McNair on Fairfax Drive NE adjacent to modern day Rockville High School. Construction continued through 1821 with additions including a powder magazine, barracks, hospital, gunnery range, parade ground andacements for artillery pieces and cavalry horses. During World War II, Fort McNair became known as “D-Day” landings site due to its role in Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944 which led to Nazi Germany’s surrender unconditionally eight days later. The area now occupied by Fort McNair National Monument includes many sites associated with D-Day such as pillboxes overlooking Omaha Beach where troops stormed ashore; training areas used by US Marines prior to battle; airfields used by RAF Bomber Command aircraft patrolling over Normandy; roads leading into Normandy from Britain; bunker complexes housing up to 25000 soldiers including ordnance stores; Communication Zone headquarters near Armentieres beach which handled all communications between Allied armies; 10 miles long Supply Route running parallel to beach from UK via Brittany Landing Point deep inside France

Rockville is a town located in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 23,752 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Chevy Chase Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the 2010 Census Rockville has an estimated population of 33,851. The name "Rockville" derives from " Roquefort," which means "to pick up." In 1684 King George III granted a land patent for what is now Rockville Township to Isaac Brockman and others in lieu of damages they had taken from John Smith during the Indian Clearances. In 1814 General James Armistead's army passed through Rockville on its way to battle at Gettysburg. Some stores and homes were left standing after that battle and are now known as Armistead's House and Old Fort Armstrong Museum; these structures were designed by architect Adam Brownell. On July 6, 1861, during the American Civil War, a large Confederate force under General Robert Ewell camped near present day White Flint Road and Bowie Avenue in Rockville for two nights before marching on Baltimore. A small detachment of Union cavalry rode into this encampment without orders and fought skirmishes with Confederate forces until relieved by Union troops early the next morning A post office called Rocksvillet was established in 1825, but it failed to take off because no one wanted to go there. In 1828 Colonel John Pugh built a gristmill here that still stands today along Bowie Avenue just north of Memorial Drive West (now US Route 1). One side of this mill building still stands as part of Pugh Elementary School complex today; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. From 1830 until 1850 there was also a sawmill here which did some limited damage to buildings around it although not all evidence suggests it ever operated successfully outside its original site due to lack of water or other resources at that time; however, according to local historian Barney Varga who wrote about this millNSA # 72-00014 numerous eyewitness reports from people living near by indicate that when active operations ceased around 1870 or so most likely because OF&O became too rich for such an old mill) The first store opened here - ? - about 1830 by William Stone? who built his store across 3rd Street NW from where modern day US Route 1 intersects 4th Street NW - probably across from where current day Park Lane meets 5th Street NW today.? The only thing remaining fromWilliam Stone's store are 2 bricks recovered recently from underneath foundations of current day Parker Place home belonging to member / research associate DrLaura Faye Tucker & her husband Rick Tucker who have long been researching & excavating Stone property adjacent thereto including Brick wallsFoundation Excavations went back further than mentioned & included discoveryof massive stone wall layers dating back over 400 years old! This brick structure marks perhaps oldest extant example we have found east Of Potomac River

The town of Rockville was founded in 1798 by members of the French and Indian War veteran John Ferguson. The first settler in the area, James Dunn, arrived in 1799. In 18th century Rockville was a small hamlet with few buildings and no market. In 1814, General Anson Mountford moved his headquarters from Alexandria to what is now Rockville because he believed that the new capital would be more advantageous for military operations. General Mountford's Headquarters remain a part of the town today. Rockville grew rapidly during the 19th century as waves of immigrants arrived to work on landowning families in its fertile valleys and hillsides. The railroad reached Rockville in 1881, making it easier for people to get around. During World War I, Rockville played an important role as a munitions depot and training ground for soldiers seeking exemption from military service. After the war, many businesses were established inrockville including J&R Wagon Works which produced wagons and other goods until 1944; American Truck Lines which operated freight trains out of Rockville until 1971; National Steel Company which built a plant at nearby Potomac Mills that supplied steel products to industry worldwide; and FBI Headquarters (later renamed U Street) from 1932-1939 on Park Avenue just outside of town limits
